Volkswagen small hatchback in works; compact sedan & Taigun on cards

Volkswagen Taigun compact SUV

In order to improve its market share, Volkswagen is planning to launch a range of budget cars in India. We reported earlier that the company will introduce a compact sedan, reportedly based on Polo, and Taigun SUV. Now, reports are coming that VW is also considering a small hatchback which will sit below the Polo hatchback.

Volkswagen has recently invested over 4,000 crore at its Pune manufacturing facility, and is now aiming to further localize its existing cars and adding new to its portfolio. The company has announced its budget brand which will first introduce its vehicles in China. We believe that the small hatchback will come to India under the company’s new budget brand.

If media reports are to be believed, the sub-4 metre sedan will be based on the Polo platform and is expected to go on sale by 2016-17. Codenamed as ‘Polo Stuffe’, the vehicle will compete against the likes of Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, and Hyundai Xcent and soon to be launched Zest sedan.

The compact SUV will be the production version of the Taigun concept unveiled at the 2014 Delhi Motor Show. The production version of the car will be unveiled at the 2014 Sao Paulo Motor Show. It is expected that the company will launch this SUV in India by 2015-16.
