Volkswagen is working on a compact sedan and compact SUV for the Indian car market. Both models will be manufactured specifically for India, and are expected to go on sale in next 2-3 years. If reports are to be believed, the Polo based compact sedan development has already started and is likely to be unveiled by early 2015. Adding to it, the design part has already been finalized and the sub-4 metre sedan is in its final stages of testing.
Volkswagen will unveil the new compact sedan by early next year. According to Volkswagen, the development of the new sedan would take just half the time usually spent on the making an all-new car. This compact sedan will only be sold in the Indian car market, indicating a new strategy of German maker to improve its sales in India. VW is likely to adopt Maruti’s strategy of making India specific product.
The new Polo sedan “codenamed Polo Stuffe” will be offered in both petrol and diesel fuel options. The diesel version of the sedan would be powered by the newly developed 1.5-litre diesel engine that also powers the new Polo and Vento. This engine is likely to produce 90PS of top power and 230Nm of torque. Its gasoline model is likely to get 1.2-litre motor that also powers the Polo hatchback, but with higher states of tune. A five-speed manual transmission is likely to come as standard, while the diesel and petrol automatic variants could also make their way to market.
