Volkswagen drove in the all new Passat into the Indian market today at a gala event in Delhi. The saloon is available in two variants – Comfortline and Highline – priced at Rs 29.99 lakh and Rs 32.99 lakh respectively. The premium executive sedan is currently in its eight-generation and gets prominent changes over the defunct model. Making a new beginning in the exponentially growing Indian market, the model was dropped VW India’s product portfolio in 2013, owing to lukewarm sales. Four years after it’s withdrawal, the company has re-introduced the model in a new avatar, that is already available for sale in global markets since 2015.
The premium sedan embodies a host of changes, some of the prominent ones include VW’s versatile MQB underpinnings. It receives aesthetic changes such as VW’s signature triple-slat grille in front, prominent hood, swooping LED headlamps with DRLs, fog lights and reworked bumper with integrated C-shaped LED light. At the side, there is a bold waistline that runs across the length of the car and merges into the split LED taillamps. Besides, it now sits on larger alloy wheels, tucked under the pronounced wheel arches. The bumper at the rear has been redesigned and is accompanied by a new trunk-lid. Styling updates have also been made to the interior that now gets a new dashboard design, Head up display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster reminiscent of the Audi A4. There is an 8.0-inch touchscreen unit that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity options.
In terms of safety, the new Passat packs in nine airbags, anti-lock-braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitor and rear-view camera among others. Read: All-new Volkswagen Polo – All You Need To Know
At the heart of the all-new Passat is the same 2.0-litre TDI oil burner that does duty in the A4 sedan. Paired to a 6-speed DSG automatic unit, the engine puts out 174.4bhp against 400Nm of torque. While power is transmitted to the front wheel, through a FWD drivetrain.
In the premium sedan segment, the all-new eighth generation Passat will field against Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Skoda Superb.
