Volkswagen India has announced to start a third production shift at its manufacturing unit in Chakan, Pune. The new shift will help the maker increase the total output by 15 per cent. In fact, the company has already hired 800 new employees for the proper functioning of this new production shift.
Volkswagen India President Andreas Lauerman said that we are expecting growth in domestic as well as export market in 2016. With the new Ameo coming this fiscal, the company is expecting a higher demand from the domestic market. Adding to it, VW India also aims at supplying more cars to export markets.
Volkswagen India’s Chakan based plant currently employs over 4,000 people including the new 800 hired for 3rd shift. Till now, the German automaker has invested around 800 million Euro at its Chakan plant.
Volkswagen Ameo will mark the company’s entry into the fast growing sub-4 metre compact sedan segment. It is based on the PQ25 platform that also underpins the Polo hatchback and the Vento compact sedan. Unveiled at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, the compact sedan is likely to be launched by mid-2016.

The Volkswagen Ameo will be offered with two engine options- 1.2-litre MPI petrol and 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine. Transmission duties will be carried out by a five-speed manual and a 7-speed DSG automatic unit. The compact sedan will take on the likes of the Hyundai Xcent, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire and the Tata Zest.
