Tata Motors have some really big plans for the Indian market. Besides expanding its SUV and EV product portfolio, the company aims to introduce advanced technologies and features across its product range. In a latest interaction with a media publication, Shailesh Chandra, Passenger Vehicles Business Head at Tata Motors, has revealed that the company is “actively looking at introducing four wheel drive technology” in the upcoming Tata electric SUVs. At present, the Tata Nexon, Harrier and the flagship Safari SUVs miss out on the AWD system.
As we have reported earlier, the home-grown automaker will roll out 10 electric cars over the next 5 years (i.e. by 2025). The company is considering the new electric SUVs for AWD that will sit above the Nexon EV. It recently revealed prices and details of the Tata Tiago EV that will go on sale in January 2023.
Official bookings for the electric hatchback will begin from 10th October, 2022. The model lineup comes in Xe, XT, XZ+ and XZ+ Tech Lux trims priced from Rs 8.49 lakh to Rs 11.79 lakh (all, ex-showroom). The Tata Tiago EV is the most affordable electric car in the country.
After the Tiago EV, the Pune-based automaker is likely to introduce the Tata Altroz EV that broke cover in its concept avatar at the 2020 Auto Expo. It’s also considering electric version of the Punch mini SUV. The upcoming new Tata electric SUVs will be based on three different platform – IC to EV conversion, Gen 2 (Sigma platform) and Gen 3 (Born Electric skateboard architecture).
Talking about the Gen 2 platform, the company will take its ICE-powered models and make them more suitable for electrification. The upcoming Tata Altroz EV, Punch EV and Sierra EV will be adopted on the same platform. The Gen 3 platform based Tata electric SUVs will come in the third phase and offer a range around 500km.
