Upcoming New Jeep & Citroen SUVs, Cars In India

For people not in the know, FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobile) and Groupe PSA have joined hands to form a new company called the STELLANTIS. Now, FCA and Groupe PSA are helping each other in increasing their market shares globally. In India, Groupe PSA has introduced its Citroen brand which will start rolling our locally developed products from the second half of 2021.

Similarly, FCA Group will only focus on improving Jeep sales in the Indian market. In India, Jeep will take help of Citroen to develop a new compact SUV. This SUV will be based on the Citroen’s new CMP platform, which will also underpin upcoming Citroen products. In this article, we talk about the upcoming Jeep and Citroen cars and SUVs in the Indian market in the near future.

American SUV maker, Jeep will launch an all-new 7-seater SUV based on the Compass’s Small-Wide platform. Jeep engineers will modify this platform to accommodate a larger SUV with longer wheelbase. It is expected that the new 7-seater SUV will be called the new Jeep Commander, as the company has released a new teaser video that shows the letter “ER”. The ER could be the last two letters of the name. The new 7-seater SUV will rival the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour and the MG Gloster.

The Jeep Commander will be powered by a 2.0-litre twin-turbocharged diesel engine, which is expected to produce around 200bhp of power and over 400Nm of torque. It will be paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission. The new model is expected to be launched in late 2021 or early 2022.

The second Jeep SUV to be launched in our market is a sub-4 meter SUV, called the Project 516. The new compact SUV is rumoured to be introduced in the second half of 2022. The SUV will also be launched in the European markets, and the production is reportedly to commence in November 2022. Project 516, the new Jeep compact SUV will initially offered with a gasoline engine. Stellantis also planned a fully electric option for February 2023 and a mild-hybrid version for January 2024.

The new Jeep compact SUV will adopt the Peugeot’s CMP platform that underpins the 2008 SUV and the Citroen C4. It is reported that the 4×4 version of the small SUV would actually be 4x, which will use an electric motor to generate traction on the opposite wheels of the combustion engine. It is expected to be powered by a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 130bhp of power. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

New Citroen Hatchback

French automaker, Citroen is planning to introduce 4 new cars in the Indian market in the next 2-3 years. The company will first launch a new sub-4 meter SUV, codenamed C21. The new sub-4 meter SUV will be based on the new CMP platform, which is the simplified version of the Peugeot 208’s CMP platform. The new model has already been caught testing in India as well as in Brazil.

The Citroen C21 could be the first model in India to feature a flex-fuel system. This system is compatible to feature a 1.2-litre petrol engine with ethanol blends starting from 27% to entirely on the biofuel. The company believes that the small SUV could give Citroen a first-mover advantage in the flexi-fuel space in India. The new C21 will rival the Renault Kiger, Nissan Magnite and the upcoming Tata HBX.

The French automaker is also developing a new compact hatchback and a new mid-sized sedan based on the CMP platform. It is also reported that the company will introduce a new mid-sized SUV to rival the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. The new SUV is expected to share styling cues from the global-spec Citroen C3 Aircross and the C4 Cactus. In fact, the C3 Aircross has already been caught testing in India. The new mid-sized SUV is reportedly to be launched in 2022. Codenamed CC24, the new mid-sized SUV will be offered with petrol engine option only.

Citroen is also working on a new electric mini SUV, which will be positioned against the upcoming Tata HBX EV. Codenamed eCC21, the new electric mini SUV could be launched in 2022-23. It is expected to be priced under Rs 10 lakh. The CK Birla Group’s Thuruvallur based plant in Tamil Nadu will serve as production hub for the ICE Citroen CC21 and electric eCC21 micro SUVs.

The new electric SUV will be based on the eCMP platform, which in global markets come with a 50kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 100kW electric motor offering WLTP range between 310km-340km. In India, however, the carmaker might bring in the eCC21 with smaller battery and a more conservative configuration.
