The American automaker had introduced the Jeep Compass SUV in India in 2017. The vehicle was an instant hit and is still the best selling model in its category. Interestingly, the Compass is the first locally produced Jeep vehicle in the country that has helped the automaker to achieve aggressive pricing. Considering the success of Jeep Compass, other carmakers are planning to foray into the premium compact SUV segment with new models. Here we bring you a list of top 5 upcoming SUVs that will directly take on the Jeep Compass in India –

1. Tata Harrier

The Tata Harrier is surely one of the most competent upcoming Jeep Compass rival in the country. Scheduled to launch in January 2019, the Harrier will mark debut of Tata’s all-new OMEGAARC platform and new-generation IMPACT 2.0 design philosophy. The new modular architecture has been co-developed by Tata and Jaguar Land Rover.

For power, the SUV uses a new Kryotec 2.0L, four-cylinder diesel engine that meets upcoming BSVI emission norms. This Cryogenic rocket engine inspired powertrain is claimed to deliver power worth 140bhp against 320Nm of torque. Initially, the Tata Harrier will be made available with a 6-speed manual transmission only. The automatic version is reported to be introduced by mid 2019. In fact, the SUV carline also misses out on AWD (all-wheel-drive) system.

Expected Price – Rs 13.5 lakh – Rs 18 lakh

2. Hyundai Tucson Facelift

Hyundai will give a mid-life update to its Tucson premium compact SUV sometime in 2019. For 2019 model year, the SUV will witness significant aesthetic and feature upgrades. Major design changes will be made at the front fascia including newly-designed headlamps and LED DRLs, revised bumper and new fog lamp assembly. While the side profile will remain unchanged, it will get new bumper, tailgate and taillamp detailing at the rear.

Interior will also witness a pack of new comfort and safety features. Engine setup is likely to be carried over from the current model – i.e. a 2.0-litre petrol and a 1.6-litre turbo GDI diesel. The gasoline unit makes power worth 160bhp and 204Nm of torque and the oil burner delivers 170bhp with 264Nm of torque. Transmission on offer will also be the same 6-speed automatic unit.

3. Honda HR-V

Honda HRV is yet another strong upcoming Jeep Compass rival in the country. As of now, the Japanese carmaker is evaluating the HR-V for the Indian market. This premium SUV (aka Honda Vezel) is already on sale in global markets. The Honda HRV shares its underpinning and a few design bits with the Jazz hatchback. Featuring Honda’s ‘Exciting H Design’ and aerodynamic elements, the SUV appears very sporty.

The Honda HRV will be packed with several high-end comfort and convenience features. It will offer segment-leading space for both front and rear occupants. Reports suggest that India-spec Honda HRV will use a locally developed 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine that’s good for 120bhp and 300Nm of torque. The petrol version will source power from the tried & tested 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine that also does duty in the City sedan.

4. Skoda Karoq

Skoda Karoq is also one of the upcoming Jeep Compass rivals in India. The Czech Republic carmaker has confirmed that it will expand its Indian product lineup with new models including the Karoq. Based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, Skoda’s new premium 5-seater SUV will be imported via a CKD route and then assembled at the company’s plant in the country.

Some of its design bits and features will be carried over from the Skoda Kodiaq 7-seater SUV. It will come with a pack of advanced connectivity and comfort features. For power, the SUV will make use of a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine churning out a maximum power of 140bhp and 320Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic transmissions will be on offer.

Expected Price – Rs 15 lakh – Rs 20 lakh

5. Kia SP Concept-based SUV

Kia Motors’ first product in India will be based on the SP concept that was previewed at the 2018 Auto Expo. While the official name of the upcoming Jeep Compass rival from Kia is yet to be revealed, it is reported to be christened Kia Tusker or Kia Trazor. The carmaker has already started its production at its Anantapur-based plant.

The new Kia premium SUV will share its platform and engines with the Hyundai Creta. That means, it could be offered with three powertrains – 1.4L U2 CRDI diesel, 1.6L U2 CRDi diesel and 1.6L Gamma petrol. The production version of the SP concept is likely to retain most of the design bits. Though, it will receive minor practical changes.

Launch Date – Early 2019
Expected Price – Rs 11 lakh – Rs 17 lakh
