Upcoming Honda Compact SUV to be Based on New City platform

We reported earlier that Honda has started working on an all-new compact SUV, which will be launched in Japan as well as in other international markets. This new SUV will sit below the brand’s HR-V SUV. Not just the compact SUV, the Japanese automaker has started working on the next-gen Honda HR-V.

The upcoming Honda compact SUV will sit below 4 meter in length, and will rival the likes of the Toyota Raize and the Suzuki Jimny. The new compact SUV will be based on the new-gen City sedan, which will be launched in India in the coming months. The new model is likely to share engines and other interior components with the new sedan, which should help Honda to keep costs in check.

It is reported that the upcoming new Honda compact SUV will be offered with 2 petrol engines including a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged and a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol with Honda’s compact hybrid system – e-HEV. While the former is good for 120bhp and 200Nm of torque, the later produces 119bhp and 144Nm. The company could also add a diesel engine to this compact SUV, but it will depend on the market in which the SUV is sold.

This global sub-4 meter SUV will take on the likes of the is also likely to be launched in the Indian market. However, Honda is yet to make an official announcement on the same. The SUV will directly rival the likes of the upcoming Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Maruti Vitara Brezza and the Mahindra XUV300.

Not just sub-4 meter SUV, Honda is also readying an all-new four-meter-plus SUV. The new SUV will be positioned between the sub-4 meter SUV and the next-gen HR-V. It will be the brand’s global model, which will challenge the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks and the Kia Seltos. The next-gen Honda HR-V will grow in size and will measure around 4.4 meters in length.
