Jeep Renegade

Upcoming cars under 15 lakhs - Jeep Renegade

After launching Compass at a competitive price, Jeep is getting ready to launch Renegade in India. It is expected that Renegade will be slotted below Compass both in terms of pricing and positioning. Coming from the stables of Jeep, it is one of the most awaited upcoming cars under Rs 15 Lakhs. Jeep will use FCA’s small wide 4×4 platform for Renegade which also underpins Compass and Fiat 500X. The spied images of the model give inking of the basic black interior with silver accents and other bits such as 3.5-inch TFT instrument panel, Uconnect touchscreen system, cruise control etc. The engine set up will most likely include 138bhp, 1.4-litre turbocharged MultiAir petrol and detuned version of 2.0-litre Multijet turbo oil burner with 138 & 168bhp output. In addition, it could also get the 1.6-litre oil burner from S-Cross. Transmission options on the Renegade carline will include 6-speed MT, 7-speed AT and 9-speed AT transmission along with Jeep’s select terrain system with five drive modes.

New Renault Duster

Next model in our list of upcomig cars under 15 lakhs slab, is the new generation Renault Duster. The French automaker has unveiled the new Duster under its Dacia brand. The SUV will make its public premiere at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show this September. While the European launch will take place in early 2018, India will have to wait until late 2018 or early 2019. This new generation Duster will use the same underpinnings from the existing model unlike its global version. Among the various changes, the all-new Duster will get comprehensive cosmetic updates on the outside and inside. Renault will also launch a 7-seat version of the SUV alongside regular 5-seat model. As for the engine options, media reports hint towards different engines across markets, however India-spec model could retain the current units and there could be a new mill as well.

Hyundai Styx compact SUV

Upcoming cars under 15 lakhs - Carlino

Hyundai gave us a peek into its upcoming subcompact SUV, which will be based on the Carlino concept, showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. In Hyundai’s line-up, the model will be slotted below Creta and will compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport, Maruti Vitara Brezza and Tata Nexon. The model showcased was based on Hyundai i20 platform, but the final production model will be based on the new-gen Santro’s platform. This will help the automaker to price this SUV competitively in the market. Engine choices on the model could include a 1.0-litre T-GDi petrol unit and a 1.5-litre diesel engine with an option between a manual and automatic gearbox.

Kia SP

Korean automaker, Kia will officially launch its first product in India in 2019. The new model will be an all-new SUV based on the Kia SP concept, which was unveiled at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. The vehicle will be locally developed at Kia Motors’ Andhra Pradesh. The SUV is based on Hyundai Creta’s platform, but it will be positioned as a premium lifestyle product.

The SUV will share mechanics with Creta, which means it could be offered with 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel engines. Both manual and automatic versions of the SUV will be on offer. The company is also working on a 7-seater version of the SUV, which is likely to be launched in 2020.

Maruti Future S

Maruti Suzuki will launch a micro SUV based on the Concept Future S that debuted at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Rumoured to be called Maruti ZEN, the small SUV will be positioned below the Vitara Brezza. It will directly rival the Mahindra KUV100 NXT. The small SUV will be powered by a 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine that produces 83bhp and 115Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic options will be on offer.

Renault 7-Seater MPV

Among other upcoming cars under 15 lakhs, Renault’s 7-seater crossover-ish MPV will go on sale in the country in 2018. This model will be developed on the Kwid’s CMF-A platform.  The new model will be introduced as an affordable 7-seater MPV and will rival the Maruti Ertiga MPV. Instead of conventional MPV design, the new model is claimed to feature crossover-ish look that offers practicality of an MPV. It is expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre K9K diesel engine that also powers the Duster and Captur.

Volkswagen T-Cross

The German premium carmaker has started testing the upcoming Volkswagen T-Cross compact SUV. Based on Volkswagen Group’s MQB-AO platform, the compact SUV is already on sale in global markets. The India-spec model is based on the heavily localised MQB AO IN platform. This will help VW to introduce several of its global products including new Polo, Virtus and T-Cross. Set to rival Hyundai Creta & Renault Captur, the VW T-Cross compact SUV will be one of the most awaited upcoming cars under 15 lakhs in India. It will be offered with a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Transmission options will include a six-speed manual and a DSG automatic unit.

Volkswagen Virtus

Volkswagen is working on the Vento replacement which will most likely be called Virtus.  Built on the MQB platform, Virtus will be slightly larger than the current Vento. In the mid-size sedan segment, Virtus will go up against Honda City, new Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz. As for the engine options, expect it to get a new 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Transmission choices can include 6-speed manual and VW’s 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox.

Tata Hornbill

Similar to Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors will also enter into the micro SUV segment. The company will launch a micro SUV based on the new Alpha modular platform that will also underpin the 45X premium hatchback. Codenamed Hornbill, the small SUV will be powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine which will be compliant with BSVI emission norms. The small car is expected to make its India debut at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo.

Mahindra XUV300

Being developed under the codename S201, Mahindra’s upcoming 5-seater SUV has been named XUV300. The XUV300 is based on the SsangYong Motor’s X100 platform that also underpins Tivoli. The Mahindra owned Italian design house, Pininfarina has worked jointly with SsangYong on the design of the upcoming model. Under the hood, It gets an all-new 1.2L petrol unit co-developed by Mahindra and SsangYong. In addition, there will be a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Upon its launch, the model will rival Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon and other models in the segment.

New Maruti Vitara

India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki will also launch the global Vitara 5-seater premium SUV in the Indian market. This SUV has already been spotted testing in India. It is based on the extended C platform that also underpins the Vitara Brezza. So, localisation won’t be a big issue. The Vitara will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and the upcoming Nissan Kicks. It is likely to be powered by a 1.6-litre MJD diesel engine that produces 118bhp and 320Nm. The company could also use the in-house developed 1.5-litre diesel engine, which is likely to first come with the new Ertiga.

Skoda Vision X

Skoda will lead the Volkswagen Group’s India Plan 2.0, which includes local development of products, technology and platform. The company is working on the heavily localised MQB AO IN platform, which will underpin 4 new upcoming Volkswagen and Skoda cars in India. Skoda will launch a compact SUV based on the Vision X concept in the country in 2020. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that is likely to offer over 110bhp of power.

Toyota Compact SUV & Premium Hatchback

Toyota and Maruti Suzuki has joined hands to develop electric cars, platforms and technology for mass markets. The alliance will also help each other to enter into new segments. Maruti will provide Baleno and Vitara Brezza to Toyota. The company will modify these 2 models to give them Toyota’s look. Both models are likely to come in petrol avatar only.

Tata 45X hatchback

Buoyed by an excellent response for Tiago, Tata Motors is now working on a premium hatchback to challenge the likes of Hyundai i20, Maruti Baleno and others in its league. Codenamed 45X, the new model will also mark the debut of Tata Motors’ AMP (Advanced Modular Platform) platform. This premium hatchback will be positioned above the Tiago and will come as a replacement for the Tata Bolt. The company has showcased the early prototype of this hatchback at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, which shows the company’s new design philosophy. It will share mechanics with Nexon – 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel.
