Internally known as Q501, it is primarily a premium SUV based on Land Rover Discovery platform. Expected to be named Merlin, this could be the next generation Tata Safari Storme, that is currently in testing phase. The premium SUV from Tata Motors will be a seven-seater model that will compete with Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson in the segment. 29. Mahindra Y400
In a bid to regain lost ground in India, Mahindra is developing several new vehicles. Being developed under the codename Y400, this one is among the several upcoming cars in India from the UV giant. While Mahindra is yet tight-lipped about the model, reports in media suggest, it could be the new premium SUV likely to be names XUV700. It is expected that Mahindra will use the new-generation body-on-frame chassis from its Korean subsidiary SsangYong for the Y400. 30. New Volkswagen Virtus
German premium carmaker, Volkswagen has revealed the Virtus mid-sized sedan that will go on sale in the global markets in early 2018. It is based on the VW Group’s MQB-AO platform that also underpins the Polo hatchback. This sedan will replace the Polo sedan or Vento in several international markets. Besides sharing platform, the sedan also shares design cues from the hatchback sibling. It will take on the likes of Honda City and others in its league.
The sedan comes with a wheelbase of 2,650mm, which is around 80mm more than that of the Polo. With increased wheelbase, this sedan now offers a large boot space of 521-litres. The 2018 Volkswagen Virtus sedan is available with two engines – a 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol and a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol. 31. Skoda Compact SUV
Czech automaker, Skoda is working on an all-new ECO platform that will underpin future range of Skoda cars in India. If media reports are to be believed, Skoda is working on a compact SUV on this platform for Indian market. This platform is basically the highly-localised version of the MQB platform. The compact SUV will rival the Hyundai Creta and Renault Captur.

32. Maruti Grand Vitara – 7 Seater SUV
The Indo-Japanese automaker is working on a premium SUV for the Indian market. The new model is likely to be called Grand Vitara and will be retailed through NEXA premium dealership network. If reports are to be believed, the new SUV will be developed on Vitara Brezza platform that will allow Maruti to price it competitively. It will be a 7 seater SUV and will rival against the likes of Mahindra XUV500, Tata Hexa and others in its league.
Previous reports suggest that Maruti could launch the global Suzuki Vitara as 7 Seater in the Indian market. This model will be positioned against Hyundai Creta & Renault Duster. 34. Mahindra S201
It will be one of the first Mahindra’s upcoming cars in India that will be based on SsangYong’s platform. This compact SUV will be developed on SsangYong X100 platform, which also underpins the Tivoli. However, this SUV will have a completely different design and new interior. SsangYong and Pininfarina, a famous Italian car design house, will help the homegrown UV maker to design this SUV.
The S201 is expected to get an all-new 1.5-litre TGDI petrol engine, which is currently in development. This new engine is expected to develop over 100bhp of power. 35. Mahindra U321
The homegrown automaker is planning to replace the Xylo MPV with an all-new premium MPV. Codenamed U321, this MPV will rival against the Toyota Innova Crysta. It will be developed by Mahindra’s North American Technical Centre, and the production of the car will soon commence at Mahindra’s Nasik plant. Going by the spy images, the U321 is likely to get conventional design and styling elements like toothed grille, bulbous headlamps with projectors, split radiator air-inlets, wraparound taillamps and a large windscreen with wiper.
This premium MPV will be powered by a 1.99-litre mHawk diesel engine that is good for 140bhp of power and 320Nm of torque.
