Upcoming Cars Under 20 Lakhs India

Seeing surge in demand for such vehicles, India is set to get a slew of cars priced under Rs 20 lakh.

Indian auto industry is going through its golden phase with recording close to double digit growth last year. The rising economy and increasing buying power, customers are now opting for bigger, better equipped and more premium cars. This shift has forced automakers to introduce their global products, which were earlier not suitable for the Indian market. Seeing surge in demand for such vehicles, India is set to get a slew of cars priced under Rs 20 lakh. If you are planning to upgrade to a new car, wait for these upcoming cars that will be priced under Rs 20 lakh.

1. Honda HRV

The next model in our list of upcoming cars under 20 lakhs is the new Honda HRV premium SUV. Japanese automaker is considering the global SUV – HRV for the Indian market. This model is based on Jazz platform, so localisation won’t be a big issue. The cabin of the SUV is designed on Honda’s Man Maximum Machine Minimum philosophy, offering spacious cabin to accommodate five adults comfortably. It will be offered with two engine options – 1.8-litre i-VTEC petrol and 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel. While the former is good for 139bhp and 175Nm, the oil burner produces 118bhp and 300Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic versions will be on offer.

2. Volkswagen Virtus

Another mid-size sedan that joins the above-mentioned upcoming cars under Rs 20 lakh is Virtus. The model underpins VW’s MQB-AO platform used in the new-gen Polo. According to reports, it will replace the ageing Vento in several markets and is likely to be heavily inspired by Polo in terms of styling. Besides, it will share engine set with the new-gen Polo and is likely to be larger than the Vento. Equipment level will be on par with other models in the segment. In India, the model will rival Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz.

3. Tata Buzzard

Tata Motors had launched the Harrier 5-seater premium SUV in the country in January 2019. The company is also working on a 7-seater Harrier, codenamed H7X, which made its global debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Called Tata Buzzard, the SUV will be the brand’s second product to be based on the OMEGA ARC platform, which is derived from Land Rover’s D8 architecture. It will feature the company’s new IMPACT 2.0 design philosophy.

The Tata Buzzard premium SUV will be powered by a 2.0-litre KRYOTEC diesel engine that also powers the Harrier. However, the Buzzard will receive the more powerful version of this turbocharged engine. It is expected to produce around 170bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox. This SUV will look different from the Harrier. It will be around 62mm longer than the Harrier, though the wheelbase will remain the same.

4. New Tata Blackbird

Tata Motors is working on an all-new mid-sized SUV, which will be based on the ALFA modular platform. Codenamed Blackbird, the SUV will directly rival the likes of Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks and others in its category. The compact SUV will be powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Adding to it, the Tata Blackbird will receive the BS6 compliant 1.5-litre diesel engine. Both manual and automatic versions will be on offer.

5. MG Hector SUV

MG Motors has officially entered in India. The company will launch the Jeep Compass rival, which will be followed by a pure-electric SUV. Called the MG Hector, the new SUV is locally developed at the brand’s new Halol based plant. It is longer than the Honda CR-V, though it will be cheaper than Jeep Compass. The first MG SUV will come with both petrol and diesel powertrains – a 141bhp, 1.5L direct injection turbo and a 2.0L diesel (Fiat sourced). The vehicle will also receive a petrol hybrid engine. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual.

6. Toyota CHR

Toyota is readying a Jeep Compass rival that is expected to launch in India sometime in 2018. To be introduced under the CHR nameplate, this is one of the highly anticipated upcoming cars in India under Rs 20 lakh. The premium SUV as reported earlier is expected to be based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) and could use the smaller 113bhp, 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit. Additionally, Toyota could roll out a hybrid version, powered by the 1.8-litre TSI unit paired to an electric motor. While the top-spec variant is likely to receive a 2.0-litre petrol engine. Transmission options on the SUV could include a 6-speed auto box, 6-speed manual and a CVT. Expect Toyota to pack in a raft of features including an 8.0-inch infotainment system etc.

7. 2020 Mahindra XUV500

Next in our list of upcoming cars under 20 lakhs is the next-generation Mahindra XUV500. It will be based on the new monocoque platform, which will also be used by Ford to develop India-specific C-segment SUV. The next model will be bigger and more spacious than the outgoing model. It will also receive a newly developed 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which is expected to produce close to 180bhp of power. Both manual and automatic versions are likely to be on offer. The 2020 XUV500 is likely to make debut at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo.

8. Jeep Renegade 

After introducing its made-in India Compass back in July, Jeep is now planning to launch its smallest SUV, Renegade that is likely to be priced aggressively. This would be second model from the American car giant to be produced locally at parent company Fiat’s plant in India. The entry-level off-roader will share Small-Wide underpinnings as well as components with Compass to keep price in check. Jeep could use detuned versions of 2.0-litre Multijet turbo and 1.4-litre T-Jet petrol engines used in Compass. While the 4WD Active Drive system is likely to be reserved for the top-spec variant.

9. Maruti Grand Vitara

With its subcompact model laying a strong ground for the carmaker in the rapidly growing UV segment, Maruti is now planning to bring in the larger Maruti GrandVitara. It is yet not clear if India will get the five seat or seven seat layout, though it will be a premium product and will be retailed through the NEXA outlets. While the mechanical details are yet hazy, we expect the SUV to use the Fiat sourced 118bhp, 1.6-litre multijet oil burner with either the 118bhp, 1.6-litre petrol or 138bhp,1.4-litre turbocharged unit. As for the transmission duties, expect Grand Vitara to come with a six-speed manual unit and Suzuki’s ALL-Grip 4-wheel drive system.

10. Skoda Karoq

After launching the seven-seater Kodiaq in India, Skoda is now evaluating options to introduce Karoq. This is indeed among the most awaited upcoming cars under Rs 20 lakh that promises to deliver impressive performance and a comfortable ride quality. Based on VW’s MQB platform, the SUV is likely to get a 2.0-litre TDI oil burner and a 1.8-litre petrol engine. Transmission duties are expected to be carried out by amanual and an automatic unit. Expect the model to pack in plethora of goodies including a digital instrument panel and a 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system reserved for the top-spec variant. Whether these features will come with the India-bound model or not, that we will know when more details are revealed in coming months.

11. Volkswagen T-Cross 

Volkswagen has revealed the new VW T-Cross compact SUV for the European, Chinese and Brazilian markets. The Brazilian-spec model rides on a longer wheelbase than the European model. It will also arrive in India in 2020. The new SUV will be based on the heavily localised MQB AO IN platform, which is currently under development in India. In fact, Skoda will also introduce a compact SUV based on this platform. The SUV will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta and Renault Captur. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that produces over 110bhp of power.

12. Kia SP

Korean automaker, Kia will officially launch its first product in the Indian market in 2019. The company had showcased the SP SUV concept at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Kia will launch an all-new 5-seater premium SUV based on the SP concept in India. Upon its launch, the SUV will rival the Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and Jeep Compass. The Kia SP features the company’s signature tiger nose grille and new edgy headlamps with two design elements – slimmer running lights on top and larger illumination element on the bottom. The SUV will be equipped with a large touchscreen infotainment system with connected car applications. It will share mechanics with the Creta SUV.

13.  Skoda Vision X

Czech automaker, Skoda will introduce a compact SUV in India to rival Hyundai Creta and Renault Captur. This model will use the locally developed MQB AO IN platform. It will share design cues from the Vision X concept. The SUV will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that produces over 110bhp of power. No diesel engine will be on offer.
