Upcoming Cars Under 20 Lakh

Indian auto industry is going through its golden phase with recording close to double digit growth last year.The rising economy and increasing buying power, customers are now opting for bigger, better equipped and more premium cars. This shift has forced automakers to introduce their global products, which were earlier not suitable for the Indian market. Seeing surge in demand for such vehicles, India is set to get a slew of cars priced under Rs 20 lakh. If you are planning to upgrade to a new car, wait for these upcoming cars that will be priced under Rs 20 lakh.

1. Honda HRV

The next model in our list of upcoming cars under 20 lakhs is the new Honda HRV premium SUV. Japanese automaker is considering the global SUV – HRV for the Indian market. This model is based on Jazz platform, so localisation won’t be a big issue. The cabin of the SUV is designed on Honda’s Man Maximum Machine Minimum philosophy, offering spacious cabin to accommodate five adults comfortably. It will be offered with two engine options – 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol and 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel. While the former is good for 118bhp and 145Nm, the oil burner produces 118bhp and 300Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic versions will be on offer.

Expected Launch –  2019

2. Volkswagen Virtus

Another mid-size sedan that joins the above-mentioned upcoming cars under Rs 20 lakh is Virtus. The model underpins VW’s MQB-AO platform used in the new-gen Polo. According to reports, it will replace the ageing Vento in several markets and is likely to be heavily inspired by Polo in terms of styling. Besides, it will share engine set with the new-gen Polo and is likely to be larger than the Vento. Equipment level will be on par with other models in the segment. In India, the model will rival Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Maruti Ciaz.

Expected Launch – 2021

3. Tata Harrier

At the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, Tata Motors had showcased the new Tata H5X, 5-seater premium SUV concept. This model was the major attractions at the 14th edition of Asia’s biggest automotive event.  The company has confirmed that the SUV will be launched before the end of 2018-19 fiscal year. Called Tata Harrier,  This will be the company’s first product to feature evolved IMPACT 2.0 design philosophy. Adding to it, the Harrier is brand’s first car to be based on Land Rover sourced L550 platform.

The Tata Harrier premium SUV will be powered by a 2.0-litre Multi-Jet diesel engine that also powers the Jeep Compass. This motor will offer two states of tunes – 148bhp/350Nm and 170bhp/350Nm. The Harrier will get the 148bhp, 2.0L version, while the more powerful engine option will come with the H7X 7-seater model. Both manual and automatic version will be on offer. It is also expected to feature Land Rover’s Terrain Response Program and all-independent suspension system.

In terms of design, the SUV comes with aggressive and bold look. Upfront is a high-mounted LED headlamp along with a more prominent three-dimensional ‘Humanity Line’ that underlines the headlamps and front grille, ‘tri-arrow’ pattern fog lamps, side air-vents and three-element skid plates. The concept model was equipped with 21-inch wheels; however, the production-ready H5X will have smaller 19-inch MRF wanderer tyres. Other highlights include blacked C-pillar, sporty roofline, sporty rear bumper and wraparound smoked tail-lamps.

4. New Honda Civic 

Honda is planning to bring 6 new cars to the Indian market and it will soon resurrect the Civic nameplate that was taken off production owing to low demand. The new Civic diesel was showcased at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo, whereas an official launch will take place before the end of 2018-19 fiscal year. Designed on the new chassis, the new-generation Civic will sit on a 2700mm long wheelbase and will have a more premium cabin. In addition to the 1.8-litre petrol engine, Honda has added the 1.6-litre i-DTEC oil burner. Transmission options will include a 6-speed manual and CVT.

5. Mahindra U321

Internally codenamed U321, Mahindra’s new MPV will take on the likes of Toyota Innova Crysta in the segment. The model as reported earlier has been developed by Mahindra’s North American Technical Centre and is based on the Mahindra’s monocoque underpinnings. Featuring a three-row layout, the model will derive power from the 1.99 oil burner from XUV500. It is expected that the upcoming U321 will replace Xylo in Mahindra’s line-up and will be styled in tandem with other models from the carmaker featuring signature elements.

Expected Launch – Sometime in 2018

6. Toyota CHR

Toyota is readying a Jeep Compass rival that is expected to launch in India sometime in 2018. To be introduced under the CHR nameplate, this is one of the highly anticipated upcoming cars in India under Rs 20 lakh. The premium SUV as reported earlier is expected to be based on Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) and could use the smaller 113bhp, 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol unit. Additionally, Toyota could roll out a hybrid version, powered by the 1.8-litre TSI unit paired to an electric motor. While the top-spec variant is likely to receive a 2.0-litre petrol engine. Transmission options on the SUV could include a 6-speed auto box, 6-speed manual and a CVT. Expect Toyota to pack in a raft of features including an 8.0-inch infotainment system etc.

7. Mahindra S 201

Mahindra is working on a slew of models, one of which is the S201. The SUV will be based on SsangYong’s X100 platform that also underpins Tivoli. Even though it will share underpinnings with Tivoli, the model is expected to have completely different exterior and interior. The new model will come with two seat layouts – 5 and 7. The five-seater model will lock horns with the likes of Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon. On the other hand, the 7-seat model will sit above 4 meter in length and will challenge the likes of Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster and others in its league.

The new Mahindra S201 will get a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and a new 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine. Both engines are developed by Mahindra and SsangYong. If reports are to be believed, the petrol engine will offer a maximum power output of around 140bhp and the diesel engine will deliver around 125bhp.

8. Jeep Renegade 

After introducing its made-in India Compass back in July, Jeep is now planning to launch its smallest SUV, Renegade that is likely to be priced aggressively. This would be second model from the American car giant to be produced locally at parent company Fiat’s plant in India. The entry-level off-roader will share Small-Wide underpinnings as well as components with Compass to keep price in check. Jeep could use detuned versions of 2.0-litre Multijet turbo and 1.4-litre T-Jet petrol engines used in Compass. While the 4WD Active Drive system is likely to be reserved for the top-spec variant.

9. Maruti Grand Vitara

With its subcompact model laying a strong ground for the carmaker in the rapidly growing UV segment, Maruti is now planning to bring in the larger Maruti GrandVitara. It is yet not clear if India will get the five seat or seven seat layout, though it will be a premium product and will be retailed through the NEXA outlets. While the mechanical details are yet hazy, we expect the SUV to use the Fiat sourced 118bhp, 1.6-litre multijet oil burner with either the 118bhp, 1.6-litre petrol or 138bhp,1.4-litre turbocharged unit. As for the transmission duties, expect Grand Vitara to come with a six-speed manual unit and Suzuki’s ALL-Grip 4-wheel drive system.

10. Skoda Karoq

After launching the seven-seater Kodiaq in India, Skoda is now evaluating options to introduce Karoq. This is indeed among the most awaited upcoming cars under Rs 20 lakh that promises to deliver impressive performance and a comfortable ride quality. Based on VW’s MQB platform, the SUV is likely to get a 2.0-litre TDI oil burner and a 1.8-litre petrol engine. Transmission duties are expected to be carried out by amanual and an automatic unit. Expect the model to pack in plethora of goodies including a digital instrument panel and a 9.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system reserved for the top-spec variant. Whether these features will come with the India-bound model or not, that we will know when more details are revealed in coming months.

11. Volkswagen T-Cross

VW had given a glimpse of the VW-T Cross Breeze concept at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show and is all set to launch it in some international markets in late 2018. It is believed that VW could bring the model to the Indian market to rival the likes of Hyundai Creta and Renault Captur. The compact SUV will be based on company’s MQB-AO platform,also used in the new-gen Polo. Engine options are likely to include a 110bhp, 1.0-litre petrol, 1.5-litre TSI and a 1.6-litre TDI unit. While reports are also rife that VW could use the new 1.4-litre TDI oil burner instead of the 1.6-litre unit. The FWD system will be standard, while the 4MOTION AWD system is likely to be restricted to the top-spec variant.

12. Kia SP

Korean automaker, Kia will officially launch its first product in the Indian market in 2019. The company had showcased the SP SUV concept at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Kia will launch an all-new 5-seater premium SUV based on the SP concept in India. Upon its launch, the SUV will rival the Hyundai Creta, Renault Captur and Jeep Compass. The Kia SP features the company’s signature tiger nose grille and new edgy headlamps with two design elements – slimmer running lights on top and larger illumination element on the bottom. The SUV will be equipped with a large touchscreen infotainment system with connected car applications. It will share mechanics with the Creta SUV.
