While Indian market is currently undergoing a transformation from being a hatchback oriented market to a space with huge demand for UVs, one thing that remains constant is the budget. Keeping Indian customers in mind, auto giants are working on affordable yet feature-loaded models for the Indian customers. In fact, now buyers have options in affordable utility segments as automakers have launched several small SUVs in India. Nissan Magnite

Nissan Magnite Colours

Japanese automaker, Nissan will enter into the sub-4 meter SUV category with an all-new Magnite. The new compact SUV will be introduced as an affordable alternative to the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet and the Mahindra XUV300. It is designed and developed on the heavily-localised CMF-A modular platform, which also underpins the Renault Triber MPV. It is reported that the new model could cost as low as Rs 5.25 lakh. Nissan’s website reveals that the upcoming Magnite will be offered in total of 8 colours including 5 mono-tone options and 3 dual-tone colour options.

In terms of features, the sub-4 meter SUV gets around view monitor, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and voice recognition, Nissan Connect with 50 features, 7-inch TFT instrument console, integrated Tyre Pressure Monitor, Cruise Control, 6 premium JBL speakers, ABS with EBD, Vehicle dynamic control, Hill start assist, traction control, SRS dual airbags, LED lighting, etc. The Nissan Magnite compact SUV will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine in naturally-aspirated and turbocharged versions. While the NA engine is capable of producing 72bhp and 96Nm of torque, the turbocharged version is likely to produce close to 95bhp and 160Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 6-speed manual, AMT and CVT

Renault HBC

Renault HBC Launch

French automaker, Renault will launch an all-new compact SUV based on the CMF-A+ platform that also underpins the Triber MPV. Codenamed HBC, the sub-4 meter SUV is rumoured to be called the Kiger. The new Renault Kiger compact SUV will challenge the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon and the Maruti Vitara Brezza.

The Renault HBC will share most of the interior components and features with the Triber MPV. It will have a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear parking camera, automatic AC, multi-functional steering wheel and the factory-fitted sunroof. The SUV will share the styling cues from the Captur and the Duster SUV. It will be powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 99bhp and 160Nm of torque. Both manual and automatic gearbox options will be on offer.

New Hyundai i20

2020 Hyundai i20 India Launch

The Korean automaker, Hyundai will launch the next-gen i20 hatchback in the country in first week of November 2020. The new model will be based on the new front-wheel-drive platform. It comes with all-new design, featuring LED headlamps with LED DRLs, new cascading grille, diamond-cut alloy wheels, floating roof, and LED tail-lamps. The new Hyundai i20 comes equipped with fully digital instrument console with a 10.25-inch screen, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and BlueLink connectivity system. Other features include wireless charging pad, multiple USB ports, Bose audio system, ambient lighting, a front centre armrest and push start/stop system.

The hatchback will be offered with 3 engine options – a 118bhp 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol, a 82bhp, 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol and a 99bhp, 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel.

Tata HBX

Upcoming SUVs Under 8 Lakh

The homegrown passenger carmaker, Tata Motors will launch the production version of the HBX micro SUV concept in early 2021. The new model was unveiled at the 2020 Auto Expo. The production-ready HBX will be based on Tata’s Alfa platform and feature Impact 2.0 design language as we have seen in the Altroz hatch.

The micro SUV will be equipped with several features including a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, semi-digital instrument cluster, ambient lighting, steering mounted controls, and others. In terms of safety and security, the HBX will get multiple airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, cornering stability program and parking sensors. It will be powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Revotron petrol engine producing 85bhp and 113Nm of torque. Transmission duties will be performed by a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Maruti Compact Crossover

New Maruti Suzuki Cars

It is reported that Maruti Suzuki is readying an all-new compact crossover, which is rumoured to be launched in the second half of 2022. The new model will be based on the Suzuki’s lightweight HEARTECT platform, which also underpins the new Ertiga. The new model will sit alongside the next-gen Vitara Brezza and will rival the Tata Nexon. Details about the upcoming compact crossover are yet to be revealed, but it is expected to cost around Rs 50,000 less than the Brezza. It is likely to be powered by a 1.5L K15B petrol engine with manual and automatic gearbox options. The crossover could also receive a new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine

New Maruti Gypsy/Jimny

Maruti Suzuki will launch the new-gen Jimny SUV in India in early 2021. It is likely to be introduced as the next-gen Gypsy SUV. The SUV design will be inspired by the new Jimny Sierra. It will have retro-modern styling with large grille, squared-off wheel arches, flat bonnet, upright stance, round-shaped headlamps and usable roof rails.

The SUV will also receive improved cabin with a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity, automatic AC and multi-functional steering wheel. The next-gen Gypsy production is likely to start in the end of 2020 at the Suzuki’s Sanand based plant in Gujarat. The new model will be sold through NEXA premium dealership network. It will be powered by a 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine producing 103bhp and 138Nm of torque. Transmission options will include a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed torque convertor.

New Volkswagen Polo

New Volkswagen Polo

German automaker, Volkswagen is planning to launch the next-gen Polo hatchback in the Indian market. The new model will be based on the locally developed MQB AO IN platform, which will also underpin the upcoming Volkswagen Taigun and the next-gen Vento. The new Polo is already on sale in the select international markets. It is longer, wider and more spacious than the previous model.

This premium hatchback continues to feature VW’s evolutionary styling with sharp body creases, chiselled sides, large stance and modish cues. Besides, the hatchback gets more premium and spacious inside the cabin. It is equipped with a high-placed touchscreen infotainment system, virtual cockpit digital instrument display from Audi TT, automatic climate control, rear AC vents, etc.

Upon launch, the new Polo hatchback will challenge the likes of Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz, Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Tata Altroz. In India, the new Polo will be powered by a 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This engine is capable of producing 110bhp of power and 172Nm of torque. Transmission choices will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic.
