Upcoming 3 New Micro SUVs – Tata Hornbill, Hyundai AX

The first time car buyers are now opting for small SUVs, crossovers or tall-boy hatchbacks such as the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso, Renault Kwid and the Maruti Suzuki Ignis. This segment will witness the arrival of 3 new micro SUVs, which will be launched in the market in the next 12 months –

1. Tata Hornbill

Tata HBX Micro SUV

Tata Motors will launch the production version of the HBX micro SUV in the second quarter of 2021. Rumoured to be called the Tata Hornbill, the mini SUV will be positioned against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis and the Mahindra KUV100 NXT. It will be the second Tata product to be based on the ALFA modular platform, which also underpins the new Altroz.

The Hornbill micro SUV will feature Tata’s IMPACT 2.0 Design Language, which we have already seen on the new Harrier and the Altroz. It will share the styling cues from the bigger Harrier. The interior layout and features are likely to be sourced from the Altroz. The entry-level SUV is likely to be powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine that churns out 86bhp of power and 113Nm of torque. Transmission options are likely to include a 5-speed manual and an AMT.

2. Citroen CC21

Citroen CC21 Mini SUV

French automaker, Citroen will start rolling out locally developed products from the second half of 2021. The new Citroen CC21 small SUV will be based on a simplified version of the Groupe PSA’s CMP (Common Modular Platform), which also underpins the Peugeot 208 hatchback.  The company will launch the Citroen CC21 mini SUV before Diwali, 2021.

It will rival the Mahindra KUV100 NXT, Tata HBX and the Nissan Magnite. It will share the styling cues from the bigger Citroen SUVs including the C3 Aircross and the C5 Aircross. The SUV has the boxy design, which hints that the rear occupants will have roomy cabin with good headroom space. The entry-level SUV is expected to be equipped with modern day features like a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, keyless entry, climate control, and cruise control. It is likely to feature a flex-fuel system, which will be compatible to feature a 1.2-litre petrol engine with ethanol blends starting from 27% to entirely on the biofuel.

3. Hyundai AX

Hyundai AX SUV India

Korean automaker, Hyundai is testing a new entry-level SUV, codenamed AX, in Korea. The new model is scheduled to make global debut by September 2021. It is expected that the new micro SUV will arrive in our market in the first quarter of 2021, most probably in February. The new model will be positioned against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis, Tata Hornbill and the Maruti S-Presso.

The new Hyundai mini SUV is expected to be based on the Santro’s platform, and could measure around 3.7 meters in length. The mini SUV is likely to feature a 1.1-litre petrol engine that produces around 67bhp of power and 100Nm of torque. Transmission choices might include 5-speed manual and an AMT gearbox option.
