Toyota’s Hyundai Creta rival in the making; cheaper than the C-HR

The new Toyota SUV will first go on sale in the Thailand in 2020.

Media reports claim that Toyota is working on an all-new SUV based on the brand’s new TNGA-C (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform. This platform also underpins the Prius hybrid and the C-HR crossover. The new model will directly rival the likes of Hyundai Creta, Honda HR-V and the upcoming Kia SP2.

The new 5-seater SUV will be produced by Toyota’s Thailand arm and will be sold in developing nations. India could be one of the markets for the new Toyota SUV as the demand for SUVs are high in our market. The new model will be a cheaper alternative to the brand’s global C-HR crossover.

Instead of crossover-ish profile, the new Toyota SUV will carry a more upright and SUV-like styling. The Toyota C-HR comes with an unorthodox styling, which suits well for the matured markets. The new Toyota SUV is expected to be unveiled in the Thailand in mid-2020 and a possible launch in the late 2020 can’t be ignored. In the South ASEAN markets, this SUV will be slotted right between the Rush and the C-HR crossover. If it arrives in India, the new model will face challenge from the likes of Nissan Kicks, Hyundai Creta, Renault Duster, Tata Harrier and the upcoming SUVs like Volkswagen T-Cross, Skoda Kamiq and Kia SP2i.

The new Toyota SUV is expected to be offered in petrol and hybrid fuel options. The SUV could receive a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.8-litre petrol-hybrid unit. Recent media reports claim that Toyota is considering a new SUV or crossover-MPV for the Indian market. This model will arrive post 2020 and will be slotted against the Jeep Compass and the MG Hector.
