Toyota Urban Cruiser Launch In September; Bookings Open Next Month

Toyota Urban Cruiser, the rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, will be the next big launch from the Japanese carmaker in the country. According to a fresh media report, the subcompact SUV will see a release just ahead of the festive season – i.e. in September, 2020. Official bookings are likely to be commenced by around the 3rd week of the next month. After the Toyota Glanza hatchback, the Urban Cruiser will be the second rebadged Maruti Suzuki product under Toyota & Suzuki global partnership.

Visually, the upcoming subcompact SUV from Toyota will look significantly different from the Vitara Brezza. While official details are yet to be revealed, it’s likely to receive newly-designed grille and front and rear bumpers. In order to achieve competitive pricing, the carmaker might use differently designed headlamps and taillamps and alloy wheels.

Interior layout and features are likely to remain unchanged. Though, there might be lighter shade theme along with Toyota’s badge on the steering wheel. In terms of features, the Toyota Urban Cruiser will offer a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity and voice commands, height adjustable driver’s seat, leather wrapped steering, 60:40 split rear seats and reverse parking camera. While the exterior and interior will be slightly tweaked, the engine setup will remain unchanged. Similar to the Vitara Brezza, the Toyota Urban Cruiser will source its power from a 1.5L petrol engine with SHVS mild hybrid system. The BS6-complaint motor is good enough for 105PS and 138Nm. It can be had either with a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 4-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the Maruti Vitara Brezza that gets SHVS with automatic gearbox only, the Urban Cruiser will offer SHVS mild hybrid technology across the range.

Prices of the upcoming Toyota compact SUV are likely to start from Rs 7.50 lakh (ex-showroom). It will be positioned against multiple products including Hyundai Venue, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and the upcoming Kia Sonet, Nissan Magnite and Renault Kiger.
