Toyota RAV4 Mid-Sized SUV India Launch And Other Details

Japanese automaker, Toyota is testing two of its globally popular SUVs – the RAV4 and the C-HR in India. The company is planning to introduce some of its SUVs as a CBU (Completely Built Unit) under the Government’s policy of importing 2,500 vehicles without local homologation process. It is expected that the Toyota RAV4 will first go on sale by mid-2021, before Diwali.

The company is testing the hybrid version of the RAV4 mid-sized SUV, which suggests that the regular ICE version won’t be launched in our market. The SUV could cost around Rs 50-60 lakh.

In terms of proportions, the new RAV4 is 4,600mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,685mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,690mm. The SUV offers a ground clearance of 205mm, which is more than sufficient to tackle Indian road conditions.

The Toyota RAV4 hybrid is based on the TNGA (Toyota New Generation Architecture), which also underpins the C-HR Crossover and Prius. The SUV features the new 2.5-litre inline 4-cylinder engine paired to an 8-speed Direct-Shift Automatic Transmission. In the hybrid variant, the engine is paired to Toyota Hybrid System II with Electronically-Controlled Continously-Variable Transmission (E-VCT). The SUV offers a combined power output of 218bhp. There is a motor/generator mounted on the rear axle, which allows the hybrid powertrain to drive power to all-4 wheels. It offers up to 80% of the torque to the rear wheels.

It is claimed to achieve 0-100kmph in less than 9 seconds. The driver can choose from Eco, Normal and Sport modes. The SUV also comes equipped with features like Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), Trailer Sway Control (TSC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC).
