Toyota Icon SUV – Creta-Sized SUV Debut On May 15

Toyota is aiming to expand its Urban Cruiser line-up by introducing new SUVs. The company has announced to introduce a new SUV under the Urban Cruiser line-up for the international markets. To be called the Toyota Urban Cruiser Icon, the new SUV will first go on sale in Indonesia, followed by other ASEAN markets. Toyota is currently selling the Hyryder SUV under the Urban Cruiser brand in India and South Africa. The Hyryder SUV is based on Suzuki’s C-Platform that underpins the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.

The upcoming Icon SUV will have no relation with the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and will be a completely different vehicle. Codenamed D03B, the new Toyota Icon will be designed and developed on the Daihatsu DNGA platform that underpins the global-spec Toyota Avanza and the Raize compact SUV. These vehicles are on sale in Indonesia and other ASEAN markets.

If media reports are to be believed, the new Urban Cruiser Icon could be called the Yaris Cross at the time of the launch in Indonesia. For people not in the know, the Japanese brand is already selling the Yaris Cross crossover in some international markets. The global-spec model is based on the Toyota’s advanced TNGA-B modular architecture.

The Urban Cruiser Icon will be a completely different model and will be longer and more spacious than the Yaris Cross. It will be positioned above the Raize compact SUV and will measure around 4.3 meters in length. The 5-seater SUV will ride on 2,655mm long wheelbase, which is similar to the Avanza. It will sit under the Corolla Cross and will directly rival the Hyundai Creta mid-sized SUV.

The new Toyota Icon is likely to share the powertrains with the Raize compact SUV. It is expected to be powered by a 1.5L petrol engine; however, the engine won’t be offered with a strong hybrid tech. The India-spec Hyryder gets a 1.5L Atkinson cycle engine with Toyota’s hybrid tech.

The new Icon won’t be introduced in our market, as Toyota has a strategic partnership with Suzuki for product development in the country. The company is developing a new SUV Coupe, which will be based on Suzuki Fronx crossover on sale in our market. This SUV Coupe is expected to be launched in our market before the end of this year, most probably around Diwali festive season.
