Toyota Kirloskar Motor has released the first teaser video of its upcoming mid-size SUV that will challenge the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. While its official name is yet to be revealed, the model is reported to be called Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder or Toyota Hyryder. The SUV’s final production version will be officially revealed on 1st July 2022. Its production will begin in August at Toyota’s Bidadi based facility in Karnataka. The official teaser shows a newly-designed grille with sporty black pattern, LED projector headlamps with LED DRLs, black ORVMs, body-coloured door handles, a sporty rear spolier and sleek LED taillamps. Just above the front grille, the SUV has glossy black cladding with split chrome bars featuring the signature badge at the centre. Reports suggest that the new Toyota Hyryder SUV will be designed on Suzuki’s Global-C platform that also underpins the Maruti Vitara Brezza, S-Cross and the global-spec Vitara SUV.
The automaker has confirmed that its upcoming new mid-size SUV will come with a hybrid powertrain. It will house a 1.5L K15C Dualjet naturally aspirated petrol engine under the hood. The motor will be offered with mild and strong hybrid technology. While the mild hybrid version will be good enough for 103bhp and 137Nm, the latter will deliver power worth 115bhp.
For performing transmission duties, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder SUV will have a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed torque convertor automatic and an e-CVT gearbox. The mild hybrid variants will come with the 6-speed manual and automatic transmission options, the strong hybrid version will be exclusively available with an e-CVT gearbox. Both FWD and AWD drivetrain systems will be on offer. The strong hybrid powertrain will be offered with the FWD and self charging system.
