Toyota Hyryder SUV Debut Today – Everything We Know So Far

The much-awaited new Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder mid-sized SUV is all set to make global debut in the country today. Production of the new SUV will commence from August at Toyota’s Bidadi based factory near Bangalore, Karnataka. The new Toyota Hyryder model will come with segment-first features and technology.

The new Toyota Hyryder mid-sized SUV will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, VW Taigun and the Skoda Kushaq. Maruti Suzuki will also launch its own version of the Hyryder, but with a different design and slightly different interior. The Maruti’s version is rumoured to be called the Vitara.

Toyota HyRyder Platform

It was speculated that Toyota Hyryder and the Suzuki Vitara will be based on Toyota’s TNGA-B or DNGA platform. However, it has been confirmed that the new SUVs will be based on Suzuki’s Global-C platform that underpins the Vitara Brezza, S-Cross and the Vitara on sale in overseas markets. What’s interesting is that the new SUV will be developed by Suzuki with the help of Toyota’s expertise.

The new Hyryder will be offered with two petrol engines – 1.5-litre dualjet petrol with mild hybrid tech and 1.5-litre petrol with strong hybrid tech. The mild hybrid version will be offered with 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox options. The strong hybrid motor will come with e-CVT unit, which is similar to the one offered on the new City hybrid. It will come with FWD (front-wheel-drive) and AWD (all-wheel-drive) system options. The front-wheel-drive and self-charging system will be exclusively offered with the strong hybrid powertrain. The AWD system will only be offered with a mild hybrid tech. The AWD setup will come with rear disc brakes.

The new Hyryder comes with all-new design, which seems inspired by the bigger Toyota SUVs including the RAV4 and the Corolla Cross. The front features a thick single-slat grille with chrome inserts and a faux carbon fibre finish. The SUV gets split headlamp setup, featuring projector LED headlamps on lower bumper and sharp LED DRLs on top. There is dark carbon finish above and below the single slat chrome grille. Other design elements include fog lamp assembly with chrome surround, air vents with honey comb pattern and silver skid plate.

The teasers also reveal that the SUV gets blacked-out ORVMs with integrated LED blinkers. The black treatment is also offered on A-pillar, which gives it a sporty appeal. The SUV comes with new dual-tone alloy wheels, squared wheel cladding and black roof. The spy images reveal that the SUV gets wrap-around LED tail-lamps and simple tailgate design. It will measure around 4.3 meters in length.
