Toyota Hybrid cars in India

While the hybrid versions of Toyota Innova, Fortuner and Altis will come first, the Liva and Etios Hybrid models come at a later stage.

Though the market for hybrid cars in India continue to be really small, automakers are hoping this to change in near future. And to do that, they are contemplating hybrid models of some of their top-selling models.

It was Maruti Suzuki’s Ciaz that became the first mass-segment product to receive a mild-hybrid version, and it was received really well by customers in India. Earlier this year, the Mahindra Scorpio’s mild hybrid variant was rolled out.  Then came the rumours about Hyundai’s plans of bringing in the hybrid version of the Creta. And now a fresh report from Hindustan Times claims that Toyota India too is planning to bring in the hybrid version of its entire lineup including the Etios, Liva, Altis, Fortuner and Innova.

Speaking to HT, Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s MD Akito Tachibana revealed the company’s product strategy for the next 2-3 years. In the same interaction, Mr Tachibana also revealed that the launch of the company’s popular global hatchback Toyota Yaris is also on cards. Though the company will have to tweak the Yaris for Indian road conditions.

Confessing that the Etios series has not been received very well in the Indian market, he denied the possibility of India-specific models. Instead, the company will bring global products and tweak them as per the Indian requirements, like it has been doing for other of its premium products here.
