The Japanese auto major, Toyota has been dominating the premium SUV segment in India ever since the launch of the Fortuner in 2009. However, things got fierce with the launch of the new-generation Ford Endeavour that re-shuffled (slightly though) the sales figures. Aiming to boost the sales momentum, Ford India slashed the Endeavour’s prices up to Rs 2.82 lakh (on Trend trim). Though, this move didn’t help the American carmaker retain the top spot in November 2016.
In November, the new Toyota Fortuner has set a brisk pace in sales with a total of 1,924 units accounting year-over-year growth of 82 percent. On the other hand, Ford India has managed to sell 562 units of the Endeavour in the same month. This also puts the Fortuner on the top spot in the list of best selling SUVs of the month. The 2016 Toyota Fortuner had garnered quite a bit of attention even before its launch. Based on the new the ‘Toyota New Generation Architecture’ (TNGA) platform, the 2016 Toyota Fortuner received comprehensive cosmetic upgrades along with more efficient engine lineup. Toyota offers the SUV with a choice of two powertrains – a 177bhp 2.8-litre GD diesel and a new 164bhp 2.7-litre petrol.
The petrol engine is available with 5-speed manual and 6-speed automatic (with paddle shift) transmission options, supported by the 2WD system. The diesel mill, on the other hand, comes with 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. The SUV’s diesel variants are available with both 2WD and 4WD options.
