Toyota Motor Corporation has confirmed it will launch battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the Indian market. The Indian arm of the Japanese carmaker will develop BEVs in collaboration with Maruti Suzuki. It will hit roads sometime in 2021.

The report further suggests that the new Toyota compact electric vehicle will be designed on the WagonR electric hatchback platform. In fact, it will also borrow the powertrain from Maruti Suzuki’s first electric car – WagonR.

While the engine details of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR electric are yet to be revealed, it’s likely to deliver an electric range of 130km on a single charge. It could be charged either via standard AC power socket or DC fast charger. The new Toyota compact EV might equip with different electric vehicle technology that will be co-developed by Toyota and Maruti Suzuki.
