Toyota-Daihatsu Developing New Mini Off-Roader To Rival Suzuki Jimny
The new-gen Suzuki Jimny has been one of the most successful mini off-roader SUVs in the past couple of years. Toyota and Daihatsu had launched the Raize and Rocky sub-4 meter SUVs with 4WD systems in Japan and select International markets. These models were supposed to challenge the Jimny; though, the new Raize and Rocky are bigger and offers single 1.0L petrol engine, and has 5 doors.
A new media report claims that Toyota’s low-cost brand, Daihatsu is readying an all-new mini off-roader. The new 3-door mini SUV will be introduced in 2021 and will directly rival the Suzuki Jimny. It is expected that the new Daihatsu compact SUV will be fitted with a 4-wheel motion system.
The details about the upcoming SUV are still under the wraps. It is reported that the new SUV will use the 660cc Turbo 3-cylinder engine with 4-wheel drive system. It will be positioned against the Suzuki Jimny version of the Kei car, not with the Sierra model. The new model will be designed and developed on the new ladder frame chassis, which is developed specifically by Daihatsu. Like the Rocky, the new SUV will use LED lighting system.
Maruti Suzuki will also launch the new Suzuki Jimny as the next-gen Gypsy in India in 2021. The India-spec model will be a 5-door model and will ride on a longer wheelbase. Toyota will introduce a new compact SUV, called the Urban Cruiser in India in August. It will be based on the Maruti Vitara Brezza.
