Toyota D22 Mid-Sized SUV To Have Similarities With Corolla Cross

Toyota will finally have a mainstream mass-market SUV for the Indian market. The company is currently selling the Urban Cruiser, which is basically the re-badged Vitara Brezza. This time, Toyota has started testing an all-new mid-sized SUV in India. The new SUV will be positioned against the popular Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos. Internally called the Toyota D22, the new mid-sized SUV is reportedly to share styling and interior with Toyota’s global SUV – the Corolla Cross. The SUV is likely to be launched by Diwali 2022.

The new SUV will be co-developed by Toyota and Maruti Suzuki, which means two SUVs will be developed on the same platform. The new Toyota D22 mid-sized SUV will be based on DNGA (Daihatsu New Generation Architecture) modular platform. This platform currently underpins multiple Toyota & Daihatsu products including the Raize/Rocky SUVs and the new Avanza and Xenia MPVs.

The spy images of the new Toyota D22 SUV suggest that it could share styling cues from global Toyota SUVs including the Corolla Cross, the RAV4 and the Yaris Cross. The SUV gets split headlamp setup with dual LED daytime running lamps and the signature Toyota grille. There could be a chrome strip running across the width, which will be in-line with latest Camry & the new Glanza. The SUV’s front bumper has a large honeycomb mesh patterned air-dam. It rides on chunky squared-off wheel arches.

Not just styling, the cabin of the upcoming Toyota D22 mid-sized SUV will have similarities with the new Corolla Cross. The SUV will get a free-standing touchscreen infotainment unit in the centre of the layered dashboard. Similar to the Corolla Cross, the horizontal AC vents are positioned below the touch with hazard light switch placed between the vents.

The Toyota D22 mid-sized SUV is likely to be offered with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay support, connected car tech, automatic AC, automatic headlamps & wipers, powered driver’s seat and powered ORVMs. The SUV is also likely to come with ADAS features such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring & a collision warning system.

It will be offered with Toyota’s hybrid technology, which has an electric motor with the internal combustion engine. The SUV will also come with a petrol engine, which could either be a 1.5L NA petrol or a 1.4L turbocharged petrol.
