Japanese automaker, Toyota is continuously testing the much-awaited new mid-sized SUV, rumoured to be called Corolla Cross, in Thailand. The new model is expected to make ASIAN debut in the next couple of months. The upcoming Toyota Corolla Cross will be positioned below the RAV4 in company’s global line-up. It will be positioned against the likes of the Honda HR-V and the Jeep Compass.
The new Toyota Corolla Cross will share styling cues from the global RAV4 SUV. It features the prominent front face with LED running lights in horizontal layout, trapezoidal-shaped grille, RAV4 inspired rear profile and black plastic cladding all around the SUV.
The Toyota Corolla Cross will be designed and developed on the TNGA modular platform that also underpins the C-HR. In terms of proportions, the upcoming SUV will have a wheelbase of 2,700mm, and the length and height stands at 4,460mm and 1,615mm respectively. The next-gen Honda HR-V, scheduled to be launched in 2021, will also grow in size and will measure around 4.4 meters in length.
The SUV will also share the mechanics with the Corolla sedan, which includes a 177bhp, 2.0L flex engine with 10-speed CVT, and a 122bhp, 1.8L flex hybrid paired to the conventional CVT gearbox. The upcoming Corolla Cross will be equipped with high-end features like 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with connectivity solutions, automatic AC, blind spot sensor, LED headlamps with projector, powered tailgate, adaptive cruise control, 360 degree camera, etc. The SUV will ride on 17-inch alloy wheels; however, the top-spec model will have 18-inch wheels.
The upcoming Toyota Corolla Cross is not likely to arrive in our market anytime soon. The company will soon introduce the Vitara Brezza based compact SUV, the Urban Cruiser. This model will rival the likes of the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and others in its category.
