The long-awaited Toyota Corolla Cross mid-sized SUV has finally been unveiled in Thailand. Deliveries of the new model will commence from September 2020. It will be the brand’s new SUV for the developing markets and will also be launched in Brazil in 2021. Here are 10 facts you want to know about the new Toyota Corolla Cross mid-sized SUV.
1. Sharing Platform With C-HR
The new Corolla Cross is based on the TNGA C (Toyota New Generation Architecture C) platform that also underpins the new-gen Corolla sedan and the C-HR crossover. This is basically the low-cost version of the TNGA-K platform that underpins the Toyota RAV4 SUV.
2. Hybrid Powertrain
The Corolla Cross is available with 2 engine options – a 1.8-litre 2ZR-FBE petrol and a petrol-electric hybrid. Paired to a CVT gearbox, the gasoline engine is capable of producing 140bhp and 175Nm of torque. The petrol-electric hybrid powertrain features a 98bhp, 1.8L petrol engine coupled to a 72bhp, electric motor. The hybrid version comes with Toyota’s e-CVT. While the hybrid unit is claimed to return 23.3kmpl of mileage, the gasoline unit offers 15.4kmpl.
3. Jeep Compass/Honda HR-V Rival
The new model sits right between the C-HR and the RAV4 SUV in terms of dimensions as well as pricing. The Corolla Cross measures 4,460mm in length, 1,825mm in width and 1,623mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,640mm. The new model directly rivals the Jeep Compass, Honda HR-V, Mazada CX-30 and the Subaru XV.
4. Design
The new Corolla Cross has Toyota’s family look with most of the styling shared with the RAV4 SUV. It comes with prominent front face with LED daytime running lights in horizontal layout, hexagonal grille, RAV4 inspired rear profile with LED tail-lights and black plastic cladding all around the SUV. This SUV rides on 18-inch alloy wheels.
5. Interior & Features
The interior of the new SUV is shared with the new Corolla sedan and the C-HR crossover. It features new Terra Rossa red shade as the interior color along with a 7-inch MID. It comes with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay support. The SUV offers a large luggage space of 487-litres. It is claimed to offer ample legroom and headroom space for front as well as rear occupants.
In terms of features, the SUV gets Power Back Door with Activated Kick Sensor. It comes equipped with power adjustable driver seat, dual-zone climate control, rear seats with 6 degree recline option, rear seat armrest with cup holders, etc.
6. Safety Features
The Corolla Cross is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense, which offers high-end safety and safety features. The features include Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Lane Tracing Assist, Automatic High Beam, Panoramic View Monitor, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear CROSS Traffic Alert, and 7 SRS Airbags.
7. Connected Car Technology
The SUV with 9-inch touchscreen compatible with Apple CarPlay also gets T-Connect connected car application. The T-Connect offers several connected car technologies like location-based service (Find My Car, Theft Track, SOS, Geo-Fencing), Telematics Care (Maintenance Reminder Service, Vehicle Information, etc) and Happiness Mobility.
8. Seven Exterior Colour Options
The Toyota Corolla Cross is available in 7 exterior color options – Metal Stream Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, Platinum White Pearl, Graphite Metallic, Red Mica Metallic, Celestite Gray Metallic and Nebula Blue.
The SUV also gets two interior color schemes – Terra Rossa and all-black. The Terra Rossa is available in Hyrid Premium Safety and Hybrid Premium with the exterior shades of Attitude Black Mica, Celestite Gray Metallic and Platinum White Pearl.
9. Four Variants (Thailand-Spec)
The new Toyota Corolla Cross is available in 4 variants – 1.8L Sport petrol, Hybrid Premium Safety, Hybrid Premium and Hybrid Smart. The gasoline variant is priced at 989,000 THB (approximately 23.76 lakh); however, Toyota is offering the SUV at a special price tag of 959,000 THB (approximately 23 lakh).
The hybrid range is available in the price bracket of 1,019,000 THB (approximately 24.48 lakh) to 1,199,000 THB (approximately 28.81 lakh).
10. India Launch?
The new Corolla Cross is designed and developed for the developing nations. It will be act as a low cost version of the RAV4, which proves to be expensive for the growing markets like Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil. The SUV will be launched in Brazil in 2021; however, India-launch is yet to be confirmed.
