Powering the Toyota Alphard MPV is a 2.5-litre petrol hybrid engine that also does duty in the Toyota Camry hybrid.
The Indian subsidiary of the Japanese carmaker, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has unveiled the 2018 Alphard hybrid luxury MPV at the Delhi Auto Expo. Besides this, the carmaker has marked its entry in the premium mid-size sedan segment with the Yaris sedan. Measuring around 5 meters, the 2018 Toyota Alphard MPV comes with a hybrid powerplant – a 150bhp, 2.5-litre, four-cylinder inline petrol engine + 141bhp, 2JM front and 68bhp, 2FM electric rear motors. Toyota has been dominating the MPV space with the new Innova Crysta. Now, the carmaker is planning to tap the luxury MPV segment and Alphard would be the right product for the Indian market. Though the carmaker hasn’t revealed the launch timeline for the vehicle, it is likely to hit showrooms in the second half of this year. Toyota will import its new hybrid luxury MPV to India via CBU (Completely Built Up) route. Since it belongs to a niche segment, it won’t have any direct rival in the country. With its bold design, plush interior and efficient hybrid powertrain, the Toyota Alphard will certainly appeal prospective buyers. Sporting the LED headlamps with LED sequential turn indicators, LED fog lamps and sporty grille, the face of the MPV looks quite aggressive. Other design elements include 18-inch alloy wheels, LED taillamps with LED sequential turn indicators, panoramic sunroof, etc. Dimensionally, the 2018 Alphard measures 4,945mm/4,950mm in length, 1,850mm in width and 1,935mm/1,950mm in height. Feature-wise, the new Toyota MPV comes loaded with several high-end luxury comfort and convenience equipment. The twin moon roof, LED roof colour illumination LED roof ambient illumination and Nappa leather upholstery add more to its luxurious ambiance. It has automated sliding centre door that works with a touch of a button. It has capacity to accommodate 8 occupants at once, thanks to its three rows of seats. The MPV also comes with 7-seats layout. The list of feature includes 8-way electric power steering, multipurpose lights for front 2 positions adjustable brightness level 3, 7-inch LED touchscreen with USB, Bluetooth with navigation and T-Connect, rear view camera, etc.
The 2018 Alphard comes equipped with the second-generation Toyota Safety Sense P safety suite. Safety features such ABS (Anti-lock braking system), EBD (Electronic brake-force distribution), VSC (Vehicle stability control), TCS (Traction control system), EPS (Electronic power steering) and brake assist are also on offer.
Engine setup of the Japan-spec 2018 Toyota Alphard includes a 2AR-FE 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder and 2GR-FKS 3.5-litre V6 unit. The MPV also comes with a hybrid powertrain – 2AR-FXE 2.5-litre inline four-cylinder petrol combined with the 2JM front and 2FM electric rear motors. The gasoline unit develops power worth 152PS against 206Nm of torque, and the front and rear motors are good for 143PS with 270Nm and 68PS with 139Nm respectively.
The 2.5L petrol comes equipped with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) and the 3.5L unit gets an 8-speed automatic gearbox. On the other hand, the hybrid version makes use of an electronic CVT unit.
