Here’s a brief on the top 7 upcoming new cars/SUVs that will hit roads in the initial months of the next year. One must note that the official launch timeline of these models are yet to be revealed by their respective carmakers.

New-Gen Mahindra Scorpio

The second-generation Mahindra Scorpio is reported to hit showrooms in early 2022. The SUV will witness comprehensive design and feature upgrades along with a new more powerful engine setup. The 2022 Mahindra Scorpio will be made available with the 2.0L mStallion petrol and 2.2L mHawk diesel engine options. Both motors will come with 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. The 4WD system will be exclusively offered on the higher trims.

Kia confirmed that its fourth product for India will arrive in early 2022. While the carmaker hasn’t yet revealed details of the upcoming model, it’s likely to be a compact MPV. The new Kia KY (codename) MPV will be based on the Seltos’ platform and positioned between the Maruti Ertiga and Toytoa Innova Cyrsta in terms of pricing. Beside the architecture, the KY is likely to share its engines with the Seltos SUV. The latter one comes with a 1.5L naturally aspirated MPI, 1.4L turbo GDI and 1.5L turbo CRDi engine options.

Volkswagen Virtus will be the brand’s second production model to be built on the MQB AO IN platform. Reports suggest that the new VW sedan will replace the Vento. The Virtus will be longer (90mm) and wider (52mm) than its replacement. In fact, its wheelbase will also be longer ensuring more cabin space. It’s likely to be offered with a 1.0L, -cylinder turbo petrol and a 1.5L turbo petrol engine making 108bhp with 175Nm and 147bhp with 250Nm respectively. There will be three gearboxes on offer – 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and 7-speed DSG.

The new-generation Maruti Alto launch is reported to be postponed to early 2022. The hatchback will receive significant changes inside and out along with the new, lightweight Heartect platform. Under the hood, the 2022 Maruti Alto is likely to feature the same 796cc, 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine that’s good for 48bhp and 69Nm. The carmaker might equip the gasoline unit with mild hybrid technology. If it happens, the new Alto will be more frugal than the current generation.

Hyundai AX1

Hyundai AX1 Small SUV Imagined

The production version of the upcoming Hyundai AX1 (codename) mini SUV will make its global debut in coming months. Its India launch, however, is reported to take place early next year. Here, it will be positioned against the Tata HBX concept based vehicle that’s due for 2021 festive season. The latest spy pictures reveal that the final model will feature Hyundai’s SUV design language with boxy and upright stance. It could be offered with the 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol and 1.3L, 3-cylinder petrol engines.

Mahindra & Mahindra is ready to challenge Tata Nexon EV with its upcoming Mahindra e-XUV300. The electric version of the compact SUV will be based on the MESMA 350 (Mahindra Electric Scalable and Modular Architecture 350) platform. It will come with a 40kW electric motor that’s good for power worth 53bhp and 120Nm of torque. The mini SUV has a 15.9 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that will offer a range of 120km on a single charge. Mahindra will offer the vehicle with both standard and fast-charging options.

Tata Altroz EV

The electric iteration of the Tata Altroz premium hatchback might arrive in the initial months of 2022. First previewed at the 2022 Auto Expo, the Altroz EV will share its powertrain with the Nexon EV. The latter one comes equipped with an IP67 certified 30.2kWh battery pack with a permanent magnet AC motor. The electric hatchback might offer a range between 250km-300km. Similar to the Nexon EV, it might get ZConnect app.
