Maruti Suzuki Ertiga has been ruling its segment ever since its launch in 2012. The MPV has always been favoured for its practicality, spacious cabin, great manoeuvrability, efficient powertrain and of-course the competitive pricing. While it rules the segment as of now, its dominance will be challenge by these 6 upcoming MPVs.  

1. MG 360M

Morris Garages showcased the MG 360M MPV from its global model linup at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo. If launched, it will be a potential rival to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in India. The 360M is the rebadged Baojun 360 that’s sold in the Chinese market. Powering the MPV is a 1.5L petrol engine that’s good for 103PS and 135Nm of torque. Transmission duties are done by a CVT automatic gearbox. Its overall length, width and height stand at 4615mm, 1735mm and 1660mm respectively, thus making it 220mm longer and 30mm shorter than the Ertiga.

2. New Kia Compact MPV

Kia Motors India is planning to foray into the MPV space with an all-new model that will be put up against the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. Details of the vehicle are scanty. Though, it’s likely to underpin the Seltos’ platform. It’s claimed to carry an “affordable price” tag and provide “adequate space” for seven adult occupants. Similar to the Seltos, the new Kia MPV is likely to be produced at the company’s Anantapur facility in Andhra Pradesh.

3. Ford-Mahindra MPV

Ford and Mahindra joint venture is working on three new SUVs and a MPV that are likely to hit roads in the next 2-3 years. The new Ford-Mahindra MPV (Codenamed B516) won’t be a badge-engineering model, but share its platform and drivetrain system with the Mahindra Marazzo. Ford might tune its suspension system for improving its drivability. It’s likely to come in 7 or 8-seat configurations. Rumour has it that the new Ford-Mahindra MPV might be offered with the BS6 1.5L diesel engine petrol engine options.

4. New Hyundai MPV

The South Korean carmaker, Hyundai is studying the feasibility of the MPV segment in the Indian market. Reports suggest that the company might aim the affordable Ertiga segment with the new model. It’s likely to be offered in multiple seating configurations.

5. New Tata MPV

New Tata MPV

The home-grown carmaker is working on an all-new MPV that will be based on the Harrier’s Omega platform. It will come with 8-seats layout and feature the brand’s Impact 2.0 design philosophy. It would be quite early to comment on its powertrain. Though, the reports suggest that the new Tata MPV might come with the 2.0L Kryotec diesel engine that does duty in the Harrier. The carmaker is working on a new 1.5L petrol engine that might also be used for the new MPV.

6. Toyota-Maruti MPV

Toyota and Maruti Suzuki will jointly develop a new C-segment MPV that will take head-to-head against the Ertiga. Maruti Suzuki will provide low-cost manufacturing and development expertise to Toyota. As of now, details of the vehicle are scarce. Though, it’s likely to come with hybrid and electric powertrains along with the petrol and diesel engine options. The new MPV might be based on a monocoquae platform. The new Toyota-Maruti MPV is expected to make global debut at the 2022 Auto Expo.
