The month of August (2017) has been a mixed bag for the Indian automobile industry. While the passenger vehicles witnessed a minor sales drop, the two-wheeler and commercial vehicle segments remained stable. No matter what sales figures indicate, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) continued to hold its dominance with 51% of market share. The Indo-Japanese carmaker sold 163,701 units previous month accounting a growth of 23.8% over the same period of last fiscal year.
In the domestic market, Maruti Suzuki recorded a total sales of 152,000 units and a growth of 26.7%. Surprisingly, the new Dzire emerged as the major sales contributor with a record sales of 30,934 units in August 2017. The compact sedan surpassed the Alto, Baleno, Swift and Vitara Brezza.
In the list of top 10 selling cars of August 2017, Maruti Suzuki acquired seven spots and three spots have been grabbed by Hyundai. No other car manufacturer managed to make to the list. At the top of the list we have the new-generation Maruti Suzuki Dzire, which is followed by the carmaker’s popular hatchback – Alto with 21,521 units. The third and fourth spots were also taken by Maruti’s Baleno and Vitara Brezza compact SUV respectively.
The Maruti WagonR also remained consistent in monthly sales and grabbed the fifth position. Though, the Swift was pushed to the sixth place with a total sales of 12,631 units. Staying strong in the competition, Hyundai managed to take over the seventh, eighth and ninth spots with Grand i10, Elite i20 and Creta respectively. The last but not the least is the Maruti Suzuki Celerio that clocked 9,210 units.
