The festive season is over in India and while there is still much left before the year comes to an end (Christmas and new year), carmakers are now eyeing the upcoming biennial event to display upcoming models for the year 2018. While the motoring show will witness plethora of concepts, new cars, facelifts, special editions etc for all those who are planning to buy a new car next year, we bring you the top 10 most awaited new cars in India in 2018, that you should watch out for.

1. New Maruti Swift

While Maruti Suzuki has launched several successful models in the past, but one brand that has achieved unprecedented response from customers is Swift. During its 12-year run, Maruti’s flagship hatchback has received two generation change and several facelifts. The upcoming generation leap will not only make it richer in terms of equipment, but it will witness radical aesthetic transformation. Underpinning the lightweight HEARTECT platform, the all-new Swift will retain power sources from the current model, albeit it is expected to be more frugal and deliver improved performance. Besides, it will be armed with new features including Suzuki’s new SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and navigation system.

2. Maruti Ertiga 2018

Next name on the list of top 10 most awaited new cars in India is Maruti’s popular compact MPV, Ertiga. Akin to Swift, the MPV is all set for a generation leap in the second half of 2018. In line with new models from MSI, this one will also use the HEARTECT underpinnings. As for styling, the new-generation Ertiga is expected to share cues with all-new Dzire. Changes will be made to the exterior as well as interior styling and expect Maruti to pack in new in-cabin tech such as the SmartPlay infotainment system with 7.0-inch display, new climate control, Android Auto & Apple CarPlay etc. The new Ertiga is expected to derive power from Suzuki’s indigenously developed 1.5-litre diesel engine and the 1.4-liytre petrol unit from the current model. While the SHVS technology could be dropped, there could be a new 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine as well. Transmission options are likely to include a 5-speed unit and an AMT gearbox.

3. Honda Amaze 2018


Honda gave its subcompact sedan, Amaze a refresh last year. With new entrants claiming for a niche in the sub four-metre sedan space, the sedan has started feeling the heat and hence a generation change makes all the sense. Aside from cosmetic changes on the outside and inside, expect Amaze to receive a power boost. That said, the 1.5-litre oil burner is expected to deliver enhanced power, while the 86.7bhp, 1.2-litre i-VTEC unit is likely to be retained as is. The 5-speed manual and an auto box will be standard on the petrol unit and there could be an additional AMT gearbox. Honda’s new 7-inch DigiPad infotainment system could be offered on the new Amaze. It will additionally receive several new comfort and safety tech on par with rivals in the segment.

4. New Maruti Ciaz

Maruti Ciaz is one of the several new models from the company that helped it transform its image in India. First launched in 2014, Ciaz was a break through model for the company, that had been grappling in the mid-size sedan space. With Hyundai Verna getting a generation change, Ciaz has witnessed drop in sales and hence MSI is working on a mid-life facelift which should be launched sometime next year. Subtle cosmetic updates, new tech and Suzuki’s newly developed 1.5-litre M15 petrol engine will round up the overall tweaks on the facelift.

Engine – 1.5-litre M15 petrol and 1.5-litre diesel

5. New Honda CRV


While Honda is planning to launch new model in India, the Japanese carmaker is also contemplating seven-seat version of its CR-V SUV. It is said that India will receive the same model that is already being retailed in Thailand. Power sources too are likely to be changed with the high displacing 1.6-litre i-DTEC oil burner expected to power the diesel version. Petrol CR-V on the other hand, could retain the 2.4-litre i-VTEC unit. Transmission choices will include a 9-speed AT and a CVT with FWD and AWD options. It will additionally receive styling updates on the outside as well inside and new in-cabin tech.

Expected Price – Rs 25 lakh to Rs 30 lakh

Engine – 2.4-litre i-VTEC petrol and 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel

6. Tata’s Premium SUV

After making inroads into the subcompact SUV space, Tata Motors is now eyeing the premium segment. That said, the company is developing a new model codenamed Q501, that will rival Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour in the segment. The premium SUV will be based on company’s new underpinnings that will be seen in the upcoming Tata cars. At the heart of the SUV will be the 169.6bhp, 2.0-litre Multijet oil burner that currently powers Jeep Compass. The engine will come with a choice of both manual and automatic gearbox along with a 2WD and AWD drivetrains.

Expected Launch – Sometime in 2018

Expected Price – Rs 30 lakh to Rs 35 lakh

Engine – 2.0-litre Multijet II Diesel

 7. Mahindra S201

Upcoming Mahindra Cars at Auto Expo 2018 S201 SUV
Among several other new models, Mahindra is also working on a new subcompact SUV that is being developed under the S201 codename. The SUV will share platform with SsangYong Tivoli X100and is expected to be offered in two variants. Upon its launch, the model will rival with Tata Nexon and Maruti Vitara Brezza in the segment. In terms of styling, Mahindra S201 is expected to borrow most of the cues from Tivoli. As for mechanicals, it could get a 1.2-litre turbocharged unit and anew While the company hasn’t revealed the official name, reports in media suggest, it could be called XUV300.

Expected Price – Rs 9 lakh to Rs 13 lakh

Engine – 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel

8. Mahindra XUV700 (SsangYong Rexton G4)

Along with a subcompact SUV, the home-grown auto giant is also developing a seven-seat SUV that will field against Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour in the segment. In international markets, this model is sold under the Rexton badge, albeit in India is could be named XUV700. That said, the model is being developed under the codename Y400 and is expected to be based on SsangYong’s new generation body-on frame chassis. Under the skin, the premium SUV will reportedly receive a 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine with a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic gearbox.

Expected Price – Rs 20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh

Engine – 2.2-litre turbo diesel

9. New Gen Hyundai Santro


Hyundai’s first model, Santro is gearing up for its second innings in India. The model was taken off production in December 2014, albeit it will return in an all new avatar sometime in 2018. Aside from new aesthetics, the hatchback could receive new engines and will reportedly fill the void created by Hyundai i10. Bring developed under the codename AH, the hatchback could derive power from the 1.1-litre iRDE and 1.2-litre Kappa units. In line with rivals in the segment, it could get an AMT unit along with a manual gearbox.

 10. Audi Q2

Upcoming Cars in India
Audi is expected to launch its compact SUV Q2 in India next year. The SUV will be slotted a notch below Q3 in the company’s line-up. Interestingly, Q2 will be the smallest offering from Audi for the Indian market that will feature a progressive design philosophy. Packed with comfort and connectivity bits, the compact SUV could derive power from the 1.0-litre TFSI petrol and 2.0-litre TDI oil burner. Transmission duties are likely to be carried over by the 7-speed S tronic unit and a 6-speed manual gearbox.
