Tata’s New Hatchback Based on Alpha-R Platform Coming Soon

The upcoming Tata’s new premium hatchback will debut the brand’s new Alpha-R platform

It is no secret that Tata is working on an all-new premium hatchback, which was first showcased as the 45X concept at the 2018 Auto Expo. The hatchback will directly rival the likes of Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Hyundai Elite i20. This premium hatchback will also mark the debut of Alpha-R platform, which will also be used to develop a micro SUV codenamed Hornbill.

The announcement was made at the Harrier’s Kerala launch by Rajendra M Petkar, president & chief technology officer of the company. Speaking to media, Petkar said that the Harrier will late come with automatic transmission.

“This vehicle is created on the Omega architecture, which is a flexible one that could be used for bringing out variants. Variants mean not just body style like MPV, coupe or sedan; you can have diesel, hybrid or electric variants also. You could also have manual or automatic transmissions. Harrier is the first manifestation of the Omega architecture,” he said.

Tata is also working on an all-new mid-sized sedan, which is scheduled to be launched in 2020. It is expected that the sedan will debut at the 2020 Delhi Auto Expo, while launch could take place in late 2020. This sedan could utilise the new Alpha-R modular platform. Tata has confirmed that the models up to 4.3 meters in length will use the Alpha platform, while the models sit above 4.3 meters will be based on the OMEGA ARC platform. The Tata 45X hatchback will be launched in the 3rd quarter of 2019. Previous media reports claim that the hatchback will receive a new 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, which could receive the new mild-hybrid system. This model will also receive a 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel engine that also powers the Nexon. Both the powertrains will be compliant with BSVI emission norms. Tata is also working on a dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which will be offered in the 45X hatchback.
