Tata To Launch Creta Rival SUV; 1.5L Turbo-Petrol Engine In The Works

Tata Motors is going through a fantastic phase, as it becomes the second largest car manufacturer in December 2022. In fact, the brand’s Nexon compact SUV also becomes the largest selling SUV with over 12,000 units sold in just 1 month. Tata is constantly selling around 30,000 cars per month for the past 1-2 years.

Tata Motors has also secured latest round of investments for its future product line-up, which will comprise of electric, CNG and Internal combustion engine. The company is planning to have 8 electric vehicles before the end of 2026-27 financial year.

A new media report claims that Tata Motors has again started working on the 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine, which will power its bigger vehicles. It will be based on the existing 1.2L turbo petrol engine that powers the Nexon & the Altroz. This engine will be a 4-cylinder engine and will power the Safari and the Harrier. The company plans to introduce this engine before the introduction of the next round of emission regulations in 2023.

The 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine is expected to produce around 160bhp. This engine will be a key powertrain to power the larger vehicles, longer than 4 meters. Speaking to AutoCar India, Shailesh Chandra, president, Passenger Vehicle Business at Tata Motors said, “Tata Motors has engines which are modular and can hence develop engines of larger capacities, and when we decide to enter other segments, we will keep all our powertrain options open.”

The report also claims that Tata Motors has started working on a new mid-sized SUV, which will measure close to 4.3 meters in length. The new SUV will rival the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and the MG Astor. The new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine will also power the upcoming mid-sized SUV. Details about the new SUV are yet to be revealed.
