The Tata Tiago Sport (Tiago Plus) will derive its power from a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, turbo engine producing power close to 120bhp.
It was only a few weeks ago when we reported Tata Motors’ plans of discontinuing the slow-selling Bolt, and now a fresh report claims that the homegrown carmaker is working on a hot-hatch version of the popular Tiago. To be called the Tata Tiago Sport, this will be a performance-oriented version of the hatchback that might hit showrooms in November, 2016. This also means that the company will not bring in the Bolt Sport which was unveiled at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo early this year. Rumor also has it that the Tiago Sport, upon its launch, will be named ‘Tiago Plus’.
The turbocharged version of the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder,‘Revotron’ engine of the Tiago Sport might develop a maximum power output of 110-120bhp. With such impressive power figure, the Tiago Sport (Tiago Plus) will take on the likes of Fiat Punto Abarth, Volkswaegn Polo GT TSI and the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS. Since the Tata Tiago Sport will share its underpinnings with the regular model of the hatch, the company might price it quite aggressively against its rivals. And we believe it makes a lot more sense to bring in a hot-hatch version of a popular car like Tiago than the Bolt. The Tiago is already the company’s top-selling model in India.

As mentioned earlier, the company might use a turbocharger to make the existing 1.2-litre Revotron more powerful instead of the Bolt’s 1.2-litre turbo engine. The same engine will also be used for the upcoming Tata Nexon. Though the company will tune it further for the Tiago Sport to extract more power. While with the Nexon, this will produce power around 105bhp, it will be around 120bhp for the Tiago Sport. More details on this will be revealed closer to its launch.
Besides the new engine, the company will use a lowered suspension and stiffened damping to make it handle the extra power and improve the overall performance.
Along with mechanical updates, the Tata Tiago Sport (Tiago Plus) will also receive several cosmetic upgrades with the help of a new body kit. Though nothing is official about its looks as of now, we expect it to feature all-new bumpers, large air intakes, new alloy wheels, revised front grille, etc. The interior of the hot hatch, too, will see several changes to give it a sporty appearance. Just like the Bolt Sport, this might get black leather upholstery with contrasting red stitches and accents.
A latest report suggests that the Tiago Sport (Tiago Plus) will go on sale in November, 2016. Though no official word on its launch timeline yet. We’ll update you more on this as early as the company reveals something.
|Minimum||Rs 7 lakh|
|Maximum||Rs 8 lakh|
With a more powerful engine, new features and a more aggressive design, we expect the Tiago Sport to be priced significantly higher than the regular version of the hatchback. Having said that, it will still be the most affordable hot-hatch in the country being based on a highly-localized product. While the top-of-the-line petrol variant of the regular Tiago costs Rs 4.81 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), we expect the hot-hatch to be priced between Rs 7 lakh – Rs 8 lakh. The Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is currently the most affordable hot-hatch at Rs 8.80 lakh (Ex-Delhi).
