Tata Motors has recently launched the Tiago EV at an introductory price range of Rs 8.49 lakh to Rs 11.79 lakh (ex-showroom), giving buyers another option to offset skyrocketing fuel prices. So, if you’re also concerned about high fuel expenses and confused between its CNG and electric version, here’s a detailed comparison of the two so that you can decide which model is suitable for you.
Specification & Running Cost Comparison
Tiago CNG | Tiago EV | |

Per KM Running Cost* | Rs 2.86 | Rs 1.40 |
Average 50km Daily Running Cost | Rs 143 | Rs 70 |
*Based on CNG price in Delhi (Rs 75.61/kg) at the time of writing this story and the public charging rate at Tata’s EV network (Rs 18.56/kWh).
- The mid-range version of the Tata Tiago EV is the least powerful of the lot, but it offers a generous amount of torque. Also, it’s worth noting that you get instant power delivery in electric vehicles as opposed to ICE vehicles which offer at certain RPM range.
- Speaking of the running cost, the EV will cost you almost half of the CNG if you use public charging stations to energize its battery pack. However, using a home charger will reduce the overall running cost to a significant extent.
Note: The above calculations are based on the claimed mileage/range figures and may differ in real-world driving conditions. For reference, the Tigor EV, which comes with a 26kWh battery pack, offers an actual drive range between 150-200 km, whereas the Tiago CNG delivers a fuel efficiency of around 17km/kg in city driving conditions.
Features
- The Tata Tiago EV is better loaded than its ICE version. That said, features like leatherette seats, ZConnect connected car tech with remote control functionality, auto headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, tire pressure monitoring system, cruise control, and multi-level regen braking are limited to its electric iteration only. However, features like projector headlamps, DRLs, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple Carplay & Android Auto, digital instrument cluster, multi-function steering wheel, etc., are common across all powertrains.
- Going electric has another benefit as you won’t have to compromise on the boot space.
Price
Tata Tiago CNG | Rs 6.30 lakh to Rs 7.73 lakh |
Tata Tiago EV | 19.2kWh: Rs 8.49 lakh to Rs 9.09 lakh 24kWh: Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 11.79 lakh |
Conclusion
The Tata Tiago EV can prove to be a good alternative for everyday use if you are willing to spend the extra penny over its CNG version. But its limited range and lack of charging infrastructure may not make it ideal for long-distance / inter-city travel.
