Tata Nexon Electric with Over 400km Range To Launch By Mid-2022

Tata Motors is reportedly working on an updated version of the Nexon Electric, which will be launched by mid-2022. The updated Nexon EV will come with a larger battery and increased range. The longer range Tata Nexon Electric is expected to be equipped with a bigger 40kWh battery.

The updated Nexon EV will be sold alongside the current Nexon EV, which currently accounts for around 60 percent of all electric cars sold in India. The reason behind the success of the Nexon EV is the value-for-money proposition; however, it gets a smallest battery i.e 30.2kWh. It is significantly cheaper than most of the electric vehicles in our market. The current model is claimed to offer an electric range of 312km; however, the real world range is around 200km.

The report claims that the feedback from existing Tata Nexon EV owners suggests that there is an increasing trend for outstation trips in EV. For longer distance, a longer range become critical. This is the major reason behind Tata Motors decision to introduce a longer range version of the Nexon EV.

Nexon Electric with Over 400km Range

The 2022 Tata Nexon electric will come with a bigger battery pack of 40kWh capacity, which is significant 30 percent higher than the current 30.2kWh battery pack. Tata engineers will have to make changes to the floor pan and the boot space is also expected to be sacrificed to accommodate the larger battery. This is also likely to increase the weight of the Nexon EV by around 100kg.

The Tata Nexon EV with higher capacity battery will increase the range of over 400km on the official test cycle. However, the EV could offer a real world range of around 300-320km on a single charge. The new model will rival the likes of the MG ZS EV and the Hyundai Kona EV.

The Tata Nexon Electric will come with a selectable re-gen modes, which will allow the driver to adjust the intensity of the regenerative braking that improves the range. The new model is also likely to get new alloy wheels and ESP (Electronic Stability Program).

The Nexon EV with larger battery is expected to cost around Rs 17 lakh to 18 lakh, which is around Rs 3 lakh – 4 lakh more than the regular model. At this price tag, the new model will undercut the prices of the Kona EV and the MG ZS EV.

New Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEML)

Tata Motors has also officially formed a new entity called Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited (TPEML) with an initial capital of 700 crore. Tata Motors has also announced to have 10 electric vehicles by FY26. The company will launch the Altroz EV and the Punch based EV in the near future.
