Tata Motors Becomes 2nd Largest Carmaker; Beats Hyundai In Dec 2021

In a huge upset, Tata Motors has overtaken Hyundai Motor India Ltd. to become India’s second largest passenger vehicle manufacturer in December 2021. This is for the first time in over a decade that Hyundai has slipped to third position in the list of top car brands in terms of sales in India.

Moreover, this is for the first time in over a decade that Tata Motors has posted its highest-ever monthly sales in December 2021. Adding to it, the company reported highest ever quarterly sales in October to December 2021 & the highest annual sales.

Tata Motors sold 35300 cars in December 2021, while Hyundia dispatched 32,312 units. The homegrown automaker beats the Korean counterpart by about 3,000 units, which is significant. In the last quarter, Tata Motors sold close to 99,000 passenger vehicles. The company ended 2021 with a massive sale number of 3.31 lakh units.

Mr. Shailesh Chandra, President, Passenger Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors Ltd. said, “Tata Motors PV business growth journey continued and set several new milestones during the quarter despite witnessing a shortfall in production due to the ongoing semi-conductor crisis. Decade high quarterly and monthly sales- 99,002 units in Q3 FY22 (growth of 44% vs Q3 FY21) and 35,299 units in Dec’21 (growth of 50% vs Dec’20) were recorded. In addition, the company also posted calendar year sale of 3,31,178 units (CY21), highest ever since the inception of the PV Business.

Tata Motors said that the newly launched Punch micro SUV has received an overwhelming response from buyers. Adding to it, the the company has recorded massive demand for its electric vehicles. The company sold 5,592 electric vehicles in Q3, FY222 and over 10,000 units in the past 9 months of FY22. The company sold 2,255 electric vehicles in December 2021.

Hyundai India is facing a huge shortage of semiconductor chips, which even forced the brand to observe ‘no production days’ in last few months. Tarun Garg, director of sales & marketing at Hyundai Motor India, said, “HMIL has registered a healthy growth of 19.2 % in CY 2021 in the domestic market over last year’s sales performance. We will continue to drive customer delight with the introduction of smart mobility solutions pegged on the tenets of Intelligent Technology, Innovation & Sustainability.”
