Estimated to be priced between Rs 4 lakh – Rs 5.5 lakh, the Tata Kite 5 could be the most affordable sub-compact sedan in India.
To be positioned below the Zest, Tata Kite 5 will be an entry-level compact sedan from the home-grown carmaker.
January 20, 2017 – Folks at Tata Motors have been quite busy of late with the launch activities of the Hexa 7-seater SUV. While the carmaker is aiming to strengthen its hold in the SUV segment, it also has two more products in the pipeline – Tata Kite 5 sub-compact sedan and Nexon compact SUV. Both the vehicles were previewed at the Delhi Auto Expo last year alongside the recently-launched Hexa. To be positioned below the Zest, the Tata Kite 5 will target buyers looking for an affordable subcompact sedan.
We expect Tata’s new sedan to be slightly more affordable than its competitors including Ford Aspire, Honda Amaze, Maruti Swift Dzire and Hyundai Xcent. Similar to the Tiago and Hexa, the Tata Kite sedan/ Sway has been designed jointly by Tata’s Pune design studio, European Technical Centre (TMETC) in UK and the Italian design centre. Reports suggest that the new Tata compact sedan might come as a replacement to the ageing Indigo eCS. With all-new engine lineup, the Tata Kite 5 sedan (Sway) will be more powerful and fuel efficient than its replacement. Some of its design bits have been borrowed from the Tiago hatchback.
|Base Model||Rs 4 lakh|
|Top Model||Rs 5.5 lakh|
Prices of the Kite 5 will be on a lower side compared to the Tata Zest. The entry-level model could be priced as low as Rs. 4.0 lakh, and the range-topping model might cost around Rs. 5.5 lakh. If launched at this price, the new Tata sedan will undercut all of its rivals.
Tata Motors hasn’t yet announced the exact launch timeline of the sedan, it is reported to come towards the end of this year.

Tata Kite sedan will share its powertrain with the Tiago hatchback – a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Revotron-derived petrol and a 1.05-litre turbocharged diesel. While the petrol motor makes a maximum power of 83.8bhp at 6,000rpm and 114Nm at 3,500rpm, the diesel mill delivers 69.04bhp at 4,000rpm and 140Nm of torque at 1,800rpm with reduced vibrations and noise.
Unveiled on the Manza Hybrid concept at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo, this turbocharged diesel motor is a revised version of the 1.4-litre DiCOR with a stiffer block and counter-balancing shafts. The new Tata sedan will come with a choice of a 5-speed manual and AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox.

Tata’s upcoming budget sedan shares its platform with the Indigo eCS’s XO. Though, the carmaker has modified this architecture for achieving better rigidity and stability. Design of the Tata Kite sedan is quite contemporary and a lot more premium than the Indigo eCS. The car wears bold stance and aggressive styling.
As mentioned above, some of its design elements have been carried forward for the Tiago including headlights, bumpers, large air intakes, front grille, taillights, and spoilers. Furthermore, the sedan gets all-new tapering roof-lines and prominent window lines. Features such as fog lamps, alloy wheels and a high-mounted LED stop lamp are restricted to the top-spec model.
Step inside and the Kite sedan will greet you with a spacious and feature-loaded cabin. There is a Zest-inspired dashboard and instrument panel along with a pack of safety & comfort fitments. Though, these are presumed to be carrying impact of cost cutting measures. The interior will have various familiar bits of Tiago such as an 8-speaker 2-DIN audio system with USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity, three spoke multi-function steering wheel, dual airbags and anti-lock braking system (ABS).
Some features will be reserved for the top-spec model such as a reverse parking camera, climate control, a rear centre armrest, USB, Aux and Bluetooth connectivity, dual front airbags and ABS. Just like the Tiago, the Tata Kite 5 sedan will have a new electric power steering. Compared to its replacement, it will be as spacious and comfortable. The sedan will offer a class-leading boot space of 420-litres. The suspension setup, too, will be tweaked for better handling and ride quality.
