Tata H5X Concept Harrier

Tata Harrier will be the first vehicle from the automaker to come with a comprehensive online configurator.

Tata Motors, the homegrown automaker will launch the much-awaited Harrier SUV in the first quarter of 2019. If media reports are to be believed, the Tata Harrier will be the first vehicle from the automaker to come with a comprehensive online configurator. This configurator will allow customers to choose engine, transmission, suspension, seating, brakes and add-on kits.

It will be for the first time that the online configurator will be offered for the mass market car. However, such configurator is already available in developed markets and for high-end cars. Commenting on the same, Rajendra Petkar, chief technology officer, Tata Motors, said, “This will be a big step-up from offering customisation, and a first for car buyers in India. The tool will help the company significantly reduce the time to market its products and enhance operational efficiency and save costs. Here I am talking about front-end, both the Omega and Alpha (the platform architecture for cars) will allow buyers to configure their own models.” Also See – Tata Harrier – 5 Key Facts You Should Know

This online configurator will be offered on upcoming Tata cars based on the OMEGA and Alpha platform. This confirms that the upcoming 45X based premium hatchback will also get this option. Adding to it, the Harrier based 7-seater SUV will also come with an online configurator. The Tata Harrier was first unveiled at the 2018 Delhi Auto Expo as the H5X concept. The SUV will enter into the production towards the end of this year.

The Tata Harrier is the first SUV from the homegrown automaker based on the OMEGA platform. This platform is directly borrowed from the Land Rover Discovery’s LS550 platform. The Harrier SUV is most likely to be powered by Fiat sourced 2.0-litre MultiJet turbo diesel engine that also powers the Jeep Compass. This engine offers two states of tunes – 148bhp with 350Nm and 170bhp with 350Nm. The Harrier is expected to use the less powerful engine, while the 7-seater model is likely to use the 170bhp, 2.0L engine. A six-speed manual transmission will come as standard, while an automatic gearbox option is also likely to be on offer. Power will be transmitted to all-4 wheels via Tata’s own 4×4 system.
