Tata H5X Hybrid Model Is A Possibility – Report

Tata H5X SUV Launch Details

To meet the new CAFE norms, Tata Motors could launch a hybrid powertrain equipped version of the H5X premium SUV in future

Tata Motors will launch the production version of the H5X concept SUV in the Indian market before the end of this financial year. Few media reports claim that the production version of the SUV will be unveiled in November 2018. According to AutoCar India, Tata Motors is also considering a hybrid variant of the Tata H5X in near future.

Speaking ACI, Rajendra Petkar, CTO, Tata Motors, said that the Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) norms could necessitate the inclusion of hybrids and electric vehicles in the manufacturer’s line-up. This means that a hybrid H5X could join the regular range of the SUV.

“The selection of the technology would always depend on what you want to achieve. Definitely one has to meet the regulations. The first phase of CAFE was implemented in 2017 and the next one is going to be there in 2022. If it’s going to be mandatory for compliance to the CAFE, and if (hybrid) supports compliance to CAFE, why not? Our ability to deliver advanced technological options is very much there. I think we need to look at whether it makes sense and then at what point of time it would make sense,” said Petkar. Also See – Upcoming Tata Cars In India

According to the first phase of CAFE norms, the cars have to be 10 per cent more efficient. The second phase, which is due in 2022, will require cars to be 30 percent more efficient. Under these norms, fuel efficiency will be noted on the basis of how much fuel car consumes to run 100kms. In order to meet CAFE norms, more automakers could opt for hybrid powertrains.
