Tata Nano Electric To Be Based On Moflex Platform

Tata Motors that’s quite busy in expanding its product lineup, is also planning to bring-in a pure electric option for its Indian buyers.

The Government of India had introduced the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) scheme that offers incentives on hybrid and electric vehicles. Interestingly, Tata Motors is also planning to introduce an all-new electric car for the Indian market. If reports are to be believed, the hatchback could be named Tata Nano Electric. This would help the company to keep ‘Nano’ brand alive, even if the current petrol model phases out.

If reports are to be believed, the new small electric car will be sold under TAMO brand and is likely to be based on company’s new Moflex platform. This car will not have a conventional design and is likely to share dimensions with the ‘Smart Car’. It will feature high-set seats and short wheelbase. A prototype of the Nano electric has already been spotted on Indian roads. The homegrown automaker is trying hard to expand its product lineup, and this pure electric car could be a part of its expansion. As a reminder, the Tata Nano electric (EV) concept was first unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. With an aim to optimize centre of gravity and weight distribution, Tata might place the power batteries on the floor just below the front seats. The engine specifications are still under wrap. In a bid to further expand the electric & hybrid base in India, the government is also planning to move to eco-friendly cars by 2030. In order to further promote eco-friendly vehicles in India, the government have also reduces taxes on such cars.

Expected Price Rs 5 lakh – Rs 6 lakh

 Since the electric batteries will increase the overall cost of the vehicle, the Tata Nano EV is expected to be priced around Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh.

Now that the company has started testing the Nano electric, we expect it launch either by the end 2018 or early 2019. A possible debut of early prototype of the Electric Nano at Auto Expo 2018 can’t be ignored.

The Tata Nano EV is expected to get an electric motor coupled with lithium batteries. The concept showcased at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show was claimed to have a range of 1160km and a 0-100kmph time of under 10 seconds. It is quite early to comment on the exact specifications of the Nano electric, but it is expected to have better range than that of Mahindra e20’s. The Mahindra e2o is claimed to have a range of 80kms and a top speed of 75kmph
