Tata Motors that’s quite busy in expanding its product lineup, is also planning to bring-in a pure electric option for its Indian buyers.
The Government of India had introduced the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) scheme that offers incentives on hybrid and electric vehicles. Interestingly, Tata Motors is also planning to introduce an all-new electric car for the Indian market. If reports are to be believed, the hatchback could be named Tata Nano Electric. This would help the company to keep ‘Nano’ brand alive, even if the current petrol model phases out.
If reports are to be believed, the new small electric car will be sold under TAMO brand and is likely to be based on company’s new Moflex platform. This car will not have a conventional design and is likely to share dimensions with the ‘Smart Car’. It will feature high-set seats and short wheelbase. Tata Motors’ European Technical Centre has also developed a one-off Bolt BEV (battery electric vehicle) as a demonstrator of its EV technology. Also Read: New Tata Nano aka Pelican Spotted Testing in India
A prototype of the Nano electric has already been spotted on Indian roads. As a reminder, the Tata Nano electric (EV) concept was first unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. With an aim to optimize centre of gravity and weight distribution, Tata might place the power batteries on the floor just below the front seats. The engine specifications are still under wrap. The Tata Nano EV is expected to get an electric motor coupled with lithium batteries. The concept showcased at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show was claimed to have a range of 1160km and a 0-100kmph time of under 10 seconds.
