Tata Motors that’s quite busy in expanding its product lineup, is also planning to bring-in a pure electric option for its Indian buyers.
The Tata Nano Electric will have a power socket on the rear left fender and a more compressed than the regular model.
In 2015, the Indian government had introduced the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles) scheme that offers incentives on hybrid and electric vehicles. In order to further promote eco-friendly vehicles in India, the government has also reduced taxes on such cars.
As a result of these tax benefits, major carmakers like Marti Suzuki and Toyota have cut down the prices of their hybrid vehicles (Ciaz and Camry). On the other side, the home-grown carmaker, Mahindra introduced the electric version of the Verito sedan.
Now, a prototype of the Tata Nano electric has been spotted. Tata Motors that’s quite busy in expanding its product lineup, is also planning to bring-in a pure electric option for its Indian buyers. And what could be a better option than the Nano to start with. As a reminder, the Tata Nano electric (EV) concept was first unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.
The spy images reveal that Tata Nano Electric will have a power socket on the rear left fender that confirms the electric nature of the car. Since there is less space between the wheel arch and tyre, we can safely say that the suspension setup of the Tata Nano Electric will be more compressed than the regular model. The purpose behind using the compacted suspension system is to maintain the body weight of the vehicle.
With an aim to optimize centre of gravity and weight distribution, Tata might place the power batteries on the floor just below the front seats. The engine specifications are still under wrap. If launched in India, the Tata Nano Electric will become a beneficiary of the government’s National Electric Mobility Mission Plan 2020 (NEMMP).
|Expected Price||Rs 5 lakh – Rs 6 lakh|
Since the electric batteries will increase the overall cost of the vehicle, the Tata Nano EV is expected to be priced around Rs 5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh.
Now that the company has started testing the Nano electric, we expect it launch either by the end of this year or early next year.
