Tata Blackbird SUV (Creta, Seltos Rival) – When It’s Coming?

Tata Motors has been quite aggressive with its new product and marketing strategies of late. The home-grown carmaker is planning to foray into new segments including the SUV coupe, compact MPV and mid-size SUV space. Tata Blackbird (codename), the rumoured premium compact SUV, is surely one of the much talked about upcoming Tata models. To be positioned between the Nexon and Harrier, the new Tata 5-seater SUV is rumored to come under Tata Motors and China’s Chery Automobile Co joint venture.

Earlier, the company was planning to bring the Blackbird as early as 2021. However, the plan seems to be delayed/altered due to ongoing pandemic and the recent India-China border tension. For people not in the know, Tata Motors and Chery joint venture is in place for the production of Jaguar and Land Rover cars in China for the past 8 years.

If reports are to be believed, Chery might enter India as an independent brand and partner with Tata Motors afterwards. The home-grown carmaker is planning to establish passenger vehicles as a separate entity to benefit its domestic business and future strategic partnerships. When China-based Chery will commence its India innings, it’s likely to come with a full range of products and share platforms with Tata. At present, Tata has Alfa and Omega –ARC platforms that are compatible for vehicles between lengths ranging 3.7m to 4.3m and 4.3m to 4.7m respectively. Both architectures are not suitable for a mid-size SUV (Tata Blackbird). Therefore, the home-grown carmaker has the option to use the Chery Tiggo SUV platform for it. The entire process might take good two years. So, we expect Tata’s Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos rival to arrive sometime in 2022.

More details about upcoming new Tata compact SUV are likely to be revealed in near future. Stay tuned to IndiaCarNews.
