Tata Motos dethroned Honda to become India’s fourth largest passenger vehicle maker in the fiscal year 2018. From April 2017 to March 2018, the home-grown carmaker sold 187,321 units accounting a growth of 22% and the Japanese carmaker registered 170,026 units sales with 8% of growth. Out of first six months of FY18, however, Honda Cars India surpassed Tata Motors in the three months (April, July and August).
It’s the Tata Nexon subcompact SUV and Tiago hatchback that emerged as major sale contributors. With an average monthly sales of 4,000 – 5,000 units, the Nexon has been generating volume for the carmaker ever since its launch. The SUV recently achieve 25,000 production milestone in the country. On the other hand, the Tiago hatchback is the highest selling model (over 40% sales) in Tata’s product lineup. The car crossed 1 lakh production mark in October 2017.
In February 2018, Tata Motors registered a total sales of 17,771 units against 12,272 units in the same month last year. It accounts a growth of 45% in passenger vehicle segment. Honda Cars India, on the other hand, witnessed a drop of 18% with the domestic sales of 11,650 units in February 2018 over 14,249 units of the same month last year.
According to industry experts, both the carmakers will continue to compete for next few months. While Tata Motors has already launched its major products, Honda will bring in the new-generation Amaze sedan, new CR-V SUV and new Civic luxury saloon.
While Maruti Suzuki grabbed the top spot with 50% market share in the passenger vehicle segment for the first time ever, the second and third slots took by Hyundai Motor Company and Mahindra & Mahindra respectively. India’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki recorded sales over 1.5 million units for the first time in its over three decade history. Check Out – Upcoming Tata Cars in India
