Tata Altroz Automatic Likely To Be Launched In 3-4 Months – Report

We informed you earlier that Tata Motors is working on a new automatic gearbox, which will be first introduced in the Altroz hatchback. A new media report that the company is developing an automatic version of the Altroz hatchback.

The Tata Altroz automatic is reportedly to be in the final stage of testing. It is likely to be launched in the next 3-4 months. The automatic gearbox is expected to be offered only with a petrol engine. The diesel Altroz will continue to be offered with manual gearbox option.

Tata Altroz Turbo Engine

Previous media reports suggest that the company is readying the dual-clutch transmission (DCT), and the Altroz will be the first to get the DCT gearbox. It could source a 7-speed DT-1 dual-clutch transmission from Punch Powertrain. This gearbox is designed for the compact vehicles with torque up to 200Nm. It is relatively more affordable than the conventional dual-clutch or torque convertor units.

The Tata Altroz is offered with two petrol engines – a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated and a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged. While the former is good for 85bhp and 113Nm, the turbo unit produces 108bhp and 140Nm of torque. Both engines are paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The hatchback is also available with a diesel engine option, which is a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo unit. This powertrain pushes out 89bhp and 200Nm of torque.

It is expected that the Altroz turbo variant will get the automatic gearbox option. It will rival the likes of the Hyundai i20 automatic, VW Polo and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno CVT. The company is also working on introducing a wide range of CNG cars including the Tiago and the Tigor CNGs.
