Suzuki Jimny 5-Door Could Be Called New Maruti Gypsy in India
Japanese automaker, Maruti Suzuki is gearing up for the launch the new-gen Jimny mini off-roader in the Indian market. Production of the new model is reportedly to be commenced in May 2020 at the company’s Sanand, Gujarat based plant. Maruti Suzuki had showcased the 3-door version of the Jimny at the 2020 Auto Expo; however, new reports claim that India will get the long wheelbase 5-door version of the Jimny.
The upcoming 5-door Maruti Suzuki Jimny will come as a replacement for the iconic Gypsy nameplate. We believe that the off-road SUV will be called the next-gen Maruti Gypsy in the Indian market. MSIL could benefit from the popularity of the Gypsy nameplate. For people not in the know, Maruti Suzuki was selling the old Jimny as the Gypsy off-roader in India.
The 5-door Maruti Gypsy will offer larger cabin and addition of rear doors will make this SUV more suitable for the family buyers. The SUV will ride on longer wheelbase, and will have stretched dimensions. However, the increase in wheelbase could impact the off-road capabilities of the SUV.
The upcoming off-roader will be equipped with several modern day features including a SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. The SUV also gets air-conditioning, swift-like steering wheel, keyless entry, engine start-stop button and automatic headlamps. It is likely to receive dual-front airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, ESP, forward braking assist and hill start assist features.
Under the bonnet of the upcoming Maruti Gypsy off-roader will be a BSVI compliant 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine producing 103bhp of power and 138Nm of torque. This is the same engine that also powers the Ciaz, Ertiga, XL6 and the 2020 Maruti Vitara Brezza. For transmission duties, the off-road SUV will get 5-speed manual as well as a 4-speed torque convertor automatic. It will come with Suzuki’s advanced 4X4 – AllGrip system.
