Suzuki Across – 6 Things To Know About Toyota RAV4-based SUV

Japanese automaker, Suzuki has recently introduced the ACross mid-sized premium SUV for the European markets. It is the first model supplied from Toyota under the new partnership between Toyota and Suzuki. The Suzuki ACross is scheduled to be launched in the European markets in the end of this year.

Plug-in Hybrid

The Suzuki ACross is only available with Plug-in Hybrid powertrain system. The system comprises of a powerful front electric motor and a powerful 2.5-litre petrol engine. The electric motor is claimed to offer 180bhp and 270Nm of torque. The electric motor draws its energy from an 18.1kWh lithium ion battery.

The ACross also comes with Suzuki’s E-Four electronic 4×4 system. The system features an independent 40kW rear motor that works in conjuction with the front motor. Benefits of this system include enhanced stability during take-off on slippery surfaces such as snow covered roads, and confident handling when cornering on varying road surfaces.

Four Driving Modes

The Plug-in Hybrid system of the Suzuki ACross offers 4 driving modes – the default EV, Auto EV/HV mode, HV mode and battery charger mode. In EV mode the SUV is driven entirely by the power of the electric motor, while in Auto EV/HV model and HV mode the engine contributes to power delivery when required. To store electricity for EV mode when the charge is low, the battery charger mode runs the engine to re-charge the battery.           

Design & Interior – Limited or No Change

The styling of the Suzuki ACross is similar to the Toyota RAV4. It features LED headlamps with a bi-beam projector and LED DRLs, a large open grille and a bumper with prominent silver under garnish. It features 19-inch alloy wheels with black gloss coating. The SUV shares most of the body panels with the RAV4. Some of the design highlights are also shared with the upcoming Toyota Corolla Cross, which is basically the low-cost version of the RAV4. The European-spec model is available in 6 exterior colour options – White Pearl Crystal Shine, Silver Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, Sensual Red Mica, Grey Metallic and Dark Blue Mica.

Similar to the exterior, the interior of the new Suzuki ACross is identical to that of the RAV4. It is equipped with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink support. It also gets convenient storage spaces such as driver’s and passenger’s side trays, centre tray, cupholders and a console box.

Suzuki’s Biggest SUV

Dimensionally, the Suzuki ACross is 4,635mm long, 1,855mm wide and 1,690mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,690mm. The SUV is claimed to have a ground clearance of 190mm. It offers a boot space of 490-litres, which can be further extended up to 1,604-litres by folding the rear seats. It is the brand’s new flagship model and will sit above the Vitara in Suzuki’s global line-up.

High-end Safety Features

The SUV is equipped with a wide range of safety and security features such as Pre-Collision System, Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Road Sign Assist (RSA), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Crossing Traffic Alert, brake hold and many more.

Not Coming to India

Suzuki has no plans to launch the ACross Plug-in Hybrid SUV in the Indian market. Instead, the Suzuki-Toyota JV is readying an all-new mid-sized SUV based on the Suzuki’s global C platform that also underpins the Vitara and the Brezza.
