Skoda Rapid CNG Confirmed; Launch This Year

Czech automaker, Skoda has announced to launch 4 new cars including the Kushaq mid-sized SUV in the country in the next 1 year. Zac Hollis, Director – Sales, Service & Marketing, Skoda Auto India, has confirmed that the company is also readying a CNG variant of the Rapid sedan.

Skoda has already started testing the new Rapid CNG. It is expected to come with a factory-fitted CNG kit. The Skoda Rapid is powered by a 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine that churns out a maximum power output of 108bhp at 5,500rpm and 175Nm of torque at 1,750rpm. While a 6-speed manual gearbox is standard across the model lineup, a 6-speed torque converter comes as an optional offering.

It is expected that Skoda Rapid CNG variant will continue to offer the same petrol engine along with a factory-fitted CNG kit. However, the CNG variant is likely to slightly less power and torque. The Czech automaker is also selling the CNG version of the 1.0L TSI in the European markets. The 1.0L petrol + CNG powertrain produces 89bhp. The same is expected with the India-spec Rapid CNG.

 The CNG kit is most likely to be offered on the entry-level variants, which will come with decent features. It will get dual front airbags, ABS, rear defogger, height adjustable seatbelts, 2-DIN audio system, etc. The Rider Plus variant gets climatronic technology with filter, black and silver design elements, glossy black treatment and etc.

Skoda is also readying an all-new mid-sized sedan, which will be based on the MQB AO IN platform. This model is likely to be sold alongside the Rapid sedan and will rival the new Honda City and the Hyundai Verna. Adding to it, Skoda will also introduce the BS6 compliant Kodiaq which will be powered by a 2.0L Turbocharged petrol engine.
