The new Skoda Rapid Automatic has finally been launched at an introductory price of Rs 9.49 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, it undercuts the Maruti Suzuki automatic and Toyota Yaris automatic that cost Rs 10.00 lakh and Rs 9.56 lakh respectively. Under the hood, the new Skoda Rapid automatic features the same 1.0L, 3-cylinder turbo petrol engine that’s good enough for 109bhp and 175Nm. For performing transmission duties, the sedan has a 6-speed torque converter AT gearbox. The same transmission unit is also available with the Volkswagen Vento sedan and Polo TSI hatchback. Unlike the old automatic gearbox, the new one has a manual sequential shift function and a sport mode. The gasoline motor delivers a claimed mileage of 16.24kmpl (AT) and 18.97kmpl (MT). It’s capable to attain a top speed of 195kmph.
The new automatic variant features quartz cut projector headlamps, a black signature grille, modern crystalline LED, silver clubber alloy wheels, black decor on B-pillar, window chrome garnish, body colour trunk spoiler. While the standard beige and black colour theme continues to be on offer, the grey and black theme with leatherette seat covers is reserved for the Onyx trim.
Talking about Skoda’s future plan, the Czech car manufacturer is planning to bring in two new locally-developed models in the country. The lineup includes a mid-size SUV based on the Vision IN concept and an all-new mid-size sedan. Reports suggest that the new Skoda sedan will replace the Rapid. The upcoming Skoda models will underpin the heavily localized MQB AO IN platform. Powering both the models will be a 109bhp, 1.0L turbo petrol motor. The new Skoda mid-size SUV will also be available with a 148bhp, 1.5L turbo petrol engine.
