Skoda Could Enter Compact SUV Segment To Rival Venue, Sonet

Czech automaker, Skoda is leading the Volkswagen Group’s India Project 2.0, which includes local development of technology, platforms and products. The company will introduce the Kushaq mid-sized SUV based on the MQB AO IN platform in the second quarter of 2021. This platform will also underpin the Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda mid-sized sedan and the India-spec VW Virtus.

Thomas Schaefer, chairman of Skoda’s global board said that the company is also looking into some of the highly-lucrative segments such as compact SUV. “It’s a tough segment… and you need lots of work to get it right. We are not quite sure whether it will be a hatch, or a crossover or an SUV. We are not quite sure.”

New Skoda Vision IN SUV

Skoda is yet to finalise this product, as building an all-new product would require fresh investment. Adding to it, the MQB AO IN platform is designed to accommodate vehicles above 4 meters in length. Skoda engineers will have to make several changes to this platform for a sub-4 meter car.

It was speculated that Skoda is considering a sub-4 meter SUV to rival the likes of the Hyundai Venue and the Kia Sonet. However, the company is yet to make an official statement on the same. Skoda believes that special tax benefit for cars under 4-meters doesn’t make sense. Schefer said, “It might have served its purpose. Maybe it’s better to focus on emissions, and consumption. There are other ways of supporting development. Why 4 meters?”

Skoda has announced to launch 4 new cars in India in the next 1 year. The company will launch the Kushaq SUV, which will be followed by the BS6-compliant Kodiaq. Adding to it, Skoda will also introduce the CNG version of the Rapid sedan. The company will also launch a mid-sized sedan, which will be positioned above the existing Rapid.
